Women's Volleyball Rocks Pace 3-1 In Non-Conference Action

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team returned to the Voller Athletic Center today for the second time this week, ousting Pace University in four sets in a neutral site contest.  The Wildcats topped the Setters 25-18, 25-18, 25-27, 25-21.
 
The results today drive Daemen to 7-8 overall, while they remain an unblemished 3-0 in league play.  Today's victory marks the fourth-straight win for the Wildcats, while they have won 14-straight East Coast Conference regular season matches dating back to last season.  Pace falls to 5-10 overall and 1-2 in the NE-10.
 
Sophomore Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y.) had a stand-out performance to pace the Wildcats, leading the way with a career-best 19 kills and 20 digs, good for her sixth double-double of the season.  Daemen had three other members post double-figure kills in the victory, including Courtney Scanlan (Ellicottville, N.Y.), Cristina Apostol (Bucharest, Romania) and Jenn Heritz (Granger, Ind.)  Scanlan posted her fourth double-double of the year, registering 16 kills and 10 digs.  Apostol recorded a game-high .444 attack percentage, nailing down 14 kills on 27 attempts with two errors.  Heritz rounded out the Daemen attack with 12 kills.
 
Senior Katie McKrell (Webster, N.Y.) doubled up with a season-high 59 assists and 10 digs; she also tallied a team-high 3 service aces.  Daemen had five players record double-digit digs in the four-set defeat.   Freshman libero Georgia Wicker (Woodstock, Ill.) posted a career-high 23 digs.  Wicker has registered 20 or more digs in three of the last four matches for the Wildcats.  Kailey Ballou (Eden, N.Y.) continued to be dominant in the back, tallying 13 digs.
 
Daemen has a stellar performance on all facets, beating Pace in kills (68), aces (7), assists (65), digs (82) and attack percentage (.259).  The squad's 68 kills today are a new team high thus far. 
 
In the opening set, Daemen tallied a match-high 19 kills and .349 attack percentage en route to the 25-18 victory.  The Wildcats jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead on the serve of McKrell, and the Setters were unable to catch Daemen.
 
The two teams battled early in the second set, finding themselves tied 9-9 until Daemen used a three-point spurt to take the 12-9 advantage.  The Wildcats used another three-point run, to widen the gap 18-14.  Daemen outscored Pace 7-4 the rest of the way, cruising to another 25-18 win.
 
Pace battled back in the third set, after being down 9-12 early, the Setters rattled of seven-consecutive points to steal the Wildcat lead 16-12.  The two sides traded points back and forth the rest of the way, with two ties and two lead changes, but Pace found themselves in the lead 23-21.  Apostol nailed down two straight kills to even the score once again 23-23, but Pace outscored the Wildcats 4-2, winning the set 27-25 and forcing a fourth game.
 
The fourth and deciding set saw the Wildcats use a two-point run to take the 17-15 lead after eight ties between the two squads.  The Setters were unable to narrow the Wildcat lead and Daemen held on to take the final frame 25-21.
 
Up next, the Wildcats take a week hiatus before traveling to Long Island for East Coast Conference action next weekend (Oct. 7-8).  Daemen faces off against NYIT on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and takes on LIU Post Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
