Women's Tennis Falls To District of Columbia

BOX SCORE

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Playing its first dual-match in 10 days, Daemen College suffered a 7-2 loss to visiting University of the District of Columbia in East Coast Conference women's tennis action at Miller Tennis Center this evening.

The loss drops Daemen below the .500 mark for the first time this season at 3-4 overall. The Wildcats have now dropped two-straight league matches as well, falling to 1-3 in ECC play.

UDC snapped a three-match slide to improve to 2-3 overall and an even 2-2 in ECC play. It was the Firebirds' first victory since a 5-4 defeat of league favorite N.Y. Institute of Technology on Sept. 8, a result that snapped the Bears' 31-match ECC winning streak. The Firebirds boast a current string of six consecutive conference tournament berths, and they were picked fourth in the ECC preseason poll.

After UDC swept three doubles matches to gain control, the visitors secured the victory by adding four wins in singles play. Dominika Hadnadova, a second-team All-ECC pick last season, led the way with her 6-2, 6-4 win at the top of the singles lineup over Daemen freshman Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.). It was the second time in the last seven days that Yuen and Hadnadova had met; the UDC standout scored a 7-5, 6-1 win at last weekend's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region Championship tournament, bouncing Yuen from the main singles draw after the Daemen greenhorn had posted three singles wins of her own in the tourney.

Freshmen Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Sul, Brazil) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) picked up singles wins to help Daemen get on the scoreboard this evening. Paschoalin won a marathon match at second singles, defeating Paula Avellan 6-3, 4-6, 1-0. Stasiuk was a straight-sets (6-3, 6-3) winner in third singles over Anastasia Khomyachenko. For Paschoalin, it was her sixth singles win of the season, pulling into a tie with Yuen for second on the team. Stasiuk's 7-4 singles mark leads Daemen at the juncture of the season.

Daemen returns to action with a rare doubleheader Saturday as non-conference foes Alderson-Broaddus University and Walsh University visit the Ellicott Tennis Courts for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. matches, respectively.
