AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team split two non-conference matches played today at the Ellicott Tennis Courts on the campus of the University at Buffalo. The Wildcats opened the twin bill with a 9-0 victory over Alderson Broaddus University, before suffering a 7-2 setback to Walsh University.
Both visiting schools are members of the NCAA Division II Great Midwest Athletic Conference. With today's results, the Wildcats are now 4-5 on the season. ABU dropped to 0-3, while Walsh improved to 1-2.
DAEMEN 9, ALDERSON BROADDUS 0
The Wildcats cruised to the win over the Battlers. Freshmen Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.) and Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Sul, Brazil) posted an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, and the Wildcats took a 3-0 lead into singles play after posting identical 8-3 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Yuen registered her fourth win of the year at No. 1 singles following a 6-0, 6-1 win over Eva Garcia (Madrid, Spain), and Paschoalin picked up her fifth win at No. 2 singles following a 6-2, 6-1 win over junior Chelsea Jefferson (El Paso, Tex.).
Freshman Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.), senior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and juniors Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) also registered straight-set wins in singles play for the Wildcats. Stasiuk did not lose a game (6-0, 6-0) during her win at No. 3 singles en route to her eighth singles win of the year.
WALSH 7, DAEMEN 2
Yuen and Paschoalin opened the match against Walsh with a hard-fought 8-6 win over sophomore Mercedes Fernandez (Sevilla, Spain) and freshman Clara Drasch (Winzer, Germany) at No. 1 doubles, but the Cavaliers took the remaining two doubles matches (8-4 and 8-1) and secured the win by claiming five of the six singles matches. Yuen and Paschoalin improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 at first doubles on the year.
Yuen picked up Daemen's other point, as she posted a 6-2, 7-6 win over Fernandez at No. 1 singles. Yuen improved to 8-6 overall and 5-3 at first singles with the win. Paschoalin battled freshman Maria Kacalova (Velky Saris, Slovakia) at No. 2 doubles, but fell 6-4, 6-4.
Daemen returns to action tomorrow (Oct. 1) when it hosts SUNY Oswego in a non-league match.
