Bears Out-Claw Wildcats

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team suffered a 5-1 defeat against N.Y. Institute of Technology in an East Coast Conference matchup at President's Stadium this afternoon.

NYIT, which entered the game ranked last in the league in total goals (10) and goals per game (1.25), broke out offensively with five-straight scores in the game before Daemen could get on the board. The win pushes the Bears to 4-5-1 on the season, including a 1-2-0 mark in ECC play. NYIT's roster features 16 returning players from their 2016 team which went 10-4-4 overall. The Bears, who have qualified for the ECC Tournament in five of the last six seasons, were picked second in the ECC preseason poll.

Daemen fell to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in ECC play with the loss. The Wildcats' high-powered offense, ranked fourth in the league in goals per game (2.11) coming in, never got on track today as NYIT held a 22-3 advantage in total shot attempts, and an 8-1 edge in shots on goal.

Junior midfielder Martin Sundell (Enebyberg, Sweden) got the ball rolling for NYIT today, scoring a pair of goals in just over one minute's time. A failed Daemen clearing attempt out of the box made its way to Sundell who netted his first goal of the season at the 12:29 mark. Sundell, a second-team All-ECC pick last season, struck again at the 13:34 mark, scoring off a feed from redshirt junior forward John Camponeschi.

The Bears would take a 3-0 lead into halftime as senior midfielder Carlos Coto (Moravia, Costa Rica) scored at the 23:29 mark. Camponeschi and and sophomore John LaFemina (Islip, N.Y.) picked up assists on the play.

Despite Daemen's attempt to regroup at the start of the second half, NYIT added to their lead with a goal at the 53:12 mark from freshman forward Kevin Martinez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) - his team-leading third of the season. Camponeschi and LaFemina again assisted.

The score remained 4-0 for nearly 30 minutes. At the 81:46 mark freshman forward Alberto Marchan (Madrid, Spain) made it a 5-0 NYIT lead with his goal off a feed from Oriol Paez (Puebla, Mexico).

Daemen would avoid the shutout however as freshman Noah Keem (Amherst, N.Y.) scored at the 87:34 mark. Keem took a through-ball from classmate Aiden Tolley (Pittsford, N.Y.) and got behind the NYIT defense on a breakaway. As NYIT goalkeeper Jonathan Rico (Elmhurst, N.Y.) came out to challenge, Keem side-stepped him and put the ball into a wide open net for his second goal of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Mike D'Amato (Orchard Park, N.Y.) made his third consecutive start for the Wildcats. He allowed four goals and made one save in over 59 minutes of work before being relieved by classmate Jarrett Lecceadone (Randolph, N.Y.). Lecceadone, who saw his first action since starting at Gannon University on Sept. 19, allowed one goal and made a pair of saves.

Daemen returns to East Coast Conference action Wednesday, Oct. 4 with a road game at longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan College. First kick is slated for 7:30 p.m.
