Men's Soccer Edges Stonehill For 1st Win Of Season

NORTH EASTON, Mass. - A goal in the 88th minute by freshman forward Finn Krueger (Neuried, Germany) snapped a 2-2 tie and delivered a dramatic win for Daemen College over host Stonehill College in non-conference men's soccer action this afternoon at Skyhawk Field.

Krueger's tally, the first of his career, completed a Daemen comeback as the Wildcats (1-2 record this season) erased a 2-1 halftime deficit to pick up their first win of the season. The goal came at the 87:38 mark as Krueger finished a play that began with a crossing feed from fellow freshman Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin (Fjaras, Sweden).

The Skyhawks, who dropped to 1-1-1 on the season, generated a corner kick opportunity and two shot attempts in the game's final minute, but all went for naught; both shot attempts were blocked before they could make their way on frame.

"Today was a big moment for our young team," said Daemen head coach Bobby McColl who sent 11 newcomers, including 10 freshmen, onto the pitch to start for the second consecutive game. "We started the game well, but found ourselves behind again. The boys showed a lot of heart to recover and they played very well in the second half. When our chances came, we took advantage of them and we defended well. We found out a lot about our character today."

Today's game bared similarities to the Wildcats' 3-2 loss Saturday at Assumption College, a game in which they established an early 1-0 lead before surrendering three-straight markers. Freshman forward Kristian Aadnoy (Gjerdrum, Norway) put the Wildcats on top today, scoring his first career goal at the 11:23 mark. Ringdahl Bohlin carried the ball up the middle of the field and found Aadnoy who had broken free of Stonehill defenders, ultimately beating Skyhawk goalkeeper Conor McDonough (Bridgewater, Mass.) who had come off the goal line to challenge.

But, the hosts responded quickly as Mackenzie Hoglund (Portland, Maine) notched his first tally of the season at the 15:53 mark to even things up at one goal apiece. Adam Branco (Naugutuck, Conn.) took the ball up the right side and found Hoglund who finished the play with a shot to the left of Daemen goalkeeper Jarrett Lecceadone (Randolph, N.Y.).

Stonehill forged ahed at the 29:16 mark when the Wildcat defense bent on a rebound opportunity. The initial shot by Connor O'Brien (Schenectady, N.Y.) hit the post and ricocheted to Michael Fraioli (Scotia, N.Y.) who touched the ball on Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) who then finished the play with his first goal of the season.

The hosts remained in the lead for the next 30 minutes, but Aadnoy knotted the score at the 61:55 mark when he pounced on a rebound opportunity that was created when Samuel Lockman (Luleaa, Sweden) rattled one off the post.

That set the stage for Krueger's game-winner in the waning moments, as Daemen snapped a seven-game slide that dated back to  early October of last year.

Stonehill held a 16-10 edge in total shot attempts, and both teams totaled six shots on goal. Lecceadone went the distance for Daemen, making four saves to earn his first collegiate victory. McDonough made a pair of saves in defeat for the Skyhawks.

Daemen returns home for a pair of contests this weekend, first facing former American Mideast Conference rival Walsh University (Saturday, Sept. 9) and secondly facing Bloomsburg University (Sunday, Sept. 10).
