ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's volleyball team remained unbeaten in East Coast Conference play following a 3-1 (26-24, 25-16, 19-25, 25-23) victory over long-time rival Roberts Wesleyan College here tonight. Daemen, which has won 12 of its last 15 matches, improved to 14-9 overall and remained atop the ECC standings at 8-0. RWC dropped to 3-14 overall and 2-6 in the ECC.
Daemen, which also posted a 3-1 victory over the Redhawks earlier this year in Amherst, N.Y., has now prevailed in the last eight showdowns with RWC. The Wildcats now own a 29-21 edge in the all-time series.
Red-shirt junior Courtney Bernard (Lancaster, Ohio) paced a balanced Daemen attack with a season-high 12 kills. Junior Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y.) added 11 kills and 16 digs, while sophomore Tirzah Peters (Amherst, N.Y.) chipped in 10 kills. Ballou has reached double digits in kills in nine of the last 12 matches, while Peters has totaled 10 or more kills in six of the last nine matches. Freshman setter Isa McCaffrey (North Royalton, Ohio), who is averaging a league-high 10.80 assists per set, totaled 44 assists, seven kills, five digs and three service aces. It marks the ninth time this season she has totaled 40 or more assists in the match. Sophomore Ali Greenwood (North Aurora, Ill.) posted a team-high 19 digs.
Senior Kristina Button (Davison, Mich.) paced the Redhawks with 10 kills, while junior Rachel Holmes (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) added nine kills and 10 digs. Freshman Lauren Chase (Boulder, Colo.) handed out 33 assists for the hosts, while senior Shelby Strausbaugh (Alden, N.Y.) totaled 21 digs.
Daemen held a 12-8 lead in the first game, before the Redhawks put together an 8-2 run and took a 16-14 lead. The teams then traded points down the stretch and the hosts appeared ready to take the first game after going up 24-22 following a Daemen hitting error. The Wildcats responded with four unanswered points and eventually won the game 26-24 following a kill by Peters.
The hosts took a 15-14 lead in game two, before Daemen took control and secured the win with a game-ending 11-1 run. Ballou, McCaffrey and sophomore Allison Post (Windsor, Calif.) all contributed two kills during the decisive 11-1 run.
The Redhawks jumped out to a 7-2 lead in game three and eventually opened up a 19-10 lead. Daemen cut the lead to four (20-16) following a 6-1 run, but the hosts would hold on for a 25-18 victory.
Game four was another back-and-forth affair that featured 15 ties. RWC erased a 20-18 deficit with three unanswered points, but the Wildcats regained control and secured the game and the match with a 7-2 run. A service ace by Greenwood closed out the match.
Daemen is now idle for a week and returns to action next weekend (Oct. 20-21) when it travels to Long Island, N.Y. for key ECC matches with Long Island University-Post and New York Institute of Technology.
