WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss to Molloy College in an East Coast Conference matchup tonight at Miller Tennis Center. Daemen dropped to 0-11 overall and 0-6 in the ECC. The visiting Lions snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the league.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the match after scoring a pair of wins in doubles play to open the match. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.
Daemen's top duo of Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) posted a 6-4 victory over Molloy's Megan Scali and Danielle Bloecker at No. 1 doubles. The visitors answered with a 6-0 win by Samantha Bloecker and Montaine Le Goupil-Maier over Daemen's Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) and Alliya Foster (Bronx, N.Y.) at No. 2 doubles. Molloy claimed the point when they were awarded No. 3 doubles by default.
Daemen came out on top in the first three singles matches. Stasiuk cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Le Goupil-Maier at No. 1 singles. The win improved Stasiuk to 6-5 overall and 3-3 in league play on the year at No. 1 singles. Robins outlasted Danielle Bloecker (6-3, 3-6, 1-0) at No. 2 singles, and Otis recorded her first career singles victory after rallying for a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 victory over Scali at third singles.
Molloy secured the win after securing the final two singles points. Samantha Bloecker defeated Ailish McDevitt (Jamesville, N.Y.) at No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-0) and Molloy claimed No. 6 singles by default
Daemen closes out the fall portion of its 2018-19 schedule tomorrow (Oct. 20) with a league match at Queens College.
