Women's Tennis Drops Fall Finale

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Playing their final match of the fall season, the Daemen College women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 defeat to regional powerhouse Queens College in East Coast Conference action tonight at Miller Tennis Center.

The loss sends Daemen to 0-12 overall and 0-7 in league play. Queens clinched its second straight ECC regular season title, and the Knights kept their overall (9-0) and ECC (7-0) records unblemished.

The visiting Knights opened the match by winning all three doubles matches on the docket, securing one point towards their total. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.

Line Sorsdahl Aasen and Ruth Artaza Martin teamed up on a 6-0 win over DC's Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) and Alliya Foster (Bronx, N.Y.) in the second doubles position. In the top spot in the lineup, QC's Anica Knezevic and Laura Ortega Jover were 6-2 winners over Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.). The Knights were also awarded a win in the third doubles position by default.

In singles play, Stasiuk battled in the No. 1 position, but fell 6-4, 7-5 to Marisa Ostoja. The Knights also earned singles wins from Louisa Brunetti (6-2, 6-0 in No. 2), Ortega Jover (6-0, 6-0 in No. 3), Knezevic (6-0, 6-0 in No. 4) and Sorsdahl Aasen (6-0, 6-0 in No. 5).

Daemen's 2018-19 season will continue next spring. The team's spring schedule will be announced at a later date.
