ERIE, Pa. - The Daemen College women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2018-19 season with a 4-3 victory over Edinboro University in a non-conference matchup tonight at the Westwood Racquet Club. Daemen picked up its first win of the season and now stands at 1-12 on the year. The host Fighting Scots dropped to 0-3. EU is a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
Today's win marked the first-ever win for Daemen over Edinboro in five all-time meetings.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the match after scoring a pair of wins in doubles play to open the match. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.
Daemen's top duo of Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) suffered a 6-3 loss to Laura Lopez and Jelena Vucenovic at No. 1 doubles. The Wildcats answered with a win at No. 2 doubles, as junior Sarah Kenny (Perth, Australia) and freshman Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) teamed up for a 6-2 win over Tatiana Batalla and Hannah Brentar. Daemen claimed the point when it was awarded No. 3 doubles by default.
EU took the first two singles matches, as Lopez defeated Stasiuk (6-3, 6-4) and Batalla downed Robins (6-0, 6-0). Kenny answered with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Vucenivic at No. 3 singles, and Otis posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Paige Morris at No. 4 singles. Today's action marked the first career appearance for Kenny, who joined the team this spring. Brentar picked up a win for the hosts at No. 5. singles with a 7-5, 2-6, 10-2 win over junior Alliya Foster (Bronx, N.Y.), but Daemen claimed the overall victory with a win by default at No. 6 singles.
Daemen returns to action tomorrow (Feb. 16) with a non-league match at Walsh University.
