WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Daemen College women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to the University of the District of Columbia in an East Coast Conference matchup here this afternoon. Daemen dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in the ECC. The host Firebirds ran their winning streak to five-straight matches and improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.
The Firebirds took a 1-0 lead in the match after scoring a pair of wins in doubles play to open the match. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.
Daemen's top duo of Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) suffered a 6-2 loss to UDC's Simone Parn and Marija Milic at No. 1 doubles. The visitors secured the doubles point after Estefania Castrillon and Joanna Skrzypczynska defeated DC's Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) and Alliya Foster (Bronx, N.Y.) at No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-0.
UDC secured the victory by winning the first three singles matches. Stasiuk suffered a 6-2, 6-2 setback to Parn at No. 1 singles, while Robins fell to Milic (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2 singles. Skrzypczynska also picked up a straight-set win for the Firebirds at No. 3 singles.
Daemen returns to action Monday (Oct. 8) when it travels to New York Institute of Technology for a league match.
