OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.. - The Daemen College women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to the six-time defending East Coast Conference champion New York Institute of Technology today. Daemen dropped to 0-9 overall and 0-4 in the ECC. The host Bears snapped a two-match slide and ran their overall record to 9-2, and their ECC mark to 4-1.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the match after scoring a pair of wins in doubles play to open the match. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.
Daemen's top duo of Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) suffered a 6-2 loss to NYIT's Diana Baumgartnere and Barbie Quagliardi at No. 1 doubles. The visitors secured the doubles point after Ivana Andric and Cosima Hoch defeated DC's Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) and Alliya Foster (Bronx, N.Y.) at No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-0.
NYIT secured the victory by winning all six singles matches. Stasiuk retired after falling losing the opening set 6-0 to Quagliardi at No. 1 singles, while Robins fell to Baumgartnere (6-0, 6-0) at No. 2 singles. Antonella Lopez Alcerro (6-0, 6-1 in No. 3 singles) and Monica Borobia (6-0, 6-0 in No. 4) singles also earned wins for the Bears. NYIT also picked up points by default in the fifth and sixth singles positions.
Daemen returns to action Tuesday (Oct. 9) when it travels to Long Island University Post for a league match.
