Wildcats Stay Perfect in the ECC With Win Over Mercy

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team capped its weekend home stand with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-20) win over Mercy College at Lumsden Gymnasium this afternoon.

The win keeps the Wildcats undefeated in East Coast Conference play and two games up on the University of Bridgeport and Molloy College in the ECC standings. Daemen, which beat Bridgeport 3-1 yesterday, improves to 13-8 overall and 7-0 in the ECC. Daemen has now won four straight and seven of its last eight matches. With the loss, Mercy drops to 6-13 overall and 3-4 in the league.

Sophomore Tirzah Peters (Amherst, N.Y.), who is third in the ECC in kills, led the team in kills for the second straight match with 13. Junior Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y.) and freshman Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) helped the Daemen cause with eight kills each. Logan also added a team-high four service aces. Freshman setter Isa McCaffrey (North Royalton, Ohio) put in 35 assists for the Wildcats and also registered eight digs and two aces. Defensively, Georgia Wicker (Woodstock, Ill.) led the team with 16 digs, while Ballou chipped in 11.

Freshman Loreto Nunez Casal (Pontevedra, Spain) led the Mavericks with seven kills, while senior setter Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J.) had 21 assists. Defensively, sophomore Leilani Vazquez (Gurabo, P.R.) led Mercy with 13 digs with senior Neysha Gonzalez (Aguadilla, P.R.) coming in with 10.

Mercy held a 4-3 lead early in set one, before Daemen took control with a 12-3 run that gave the hosts a 15-7 lead. The Wildcats later took a double-digit lead (18-8) following a kill by Logan, and the Wildcats later used a couple three-point runs to put the Mavericks down 25-11.

The Wildcats found themselves down early in each of the next two sets. In the second set, Mercy scored tje first four points and later held a six-point lead, 15-9. Daemen answered with five straight points and eventually was able to tie the set at 16-16. The Wildcats later got off a quick three-point run to go up 23-20 and went on to win the set 25-23.

Mercy took another 4-0 lead in set three, but Daemen scored six of the next seven points to go up 6-5. With both teams trading points, Daemen put together a five-point run to go up 18-11. Mercy cut the lead to four points several times down the stretch, but Daemen held on for a 25-20 victory.

The Wildcats capitalized off its 11 aces compared to Mercy's two. Daemen also led in attacking percentage coming in at 21.8 percent while Mercy was at 10.9 percent for the match.

Up next, the Wildcats travel to Syracuse, N.Y. for a non-conference matchup against Le Moyne College on Tuesday (Oct. 9) at 7 p.m. The Dolphins stand at 8-7 overall and 1-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
