It marked Daemen's first win in the series since the 2004-05 season, and their first at Gannon's Hammermill Center since the 1996-97 season. The Wildcats snapped a two-game slide and evened their overall record at 3-3. Gannon, which is ranked ninth in the latest D2SIDA Atlantic Region poll, dropped to 4-3 this season with tonight's loss. After opening up a 10-point lead in the third quarter, Daemen found themselves trailing 52-47 as time ticked away late in the fourth. A jumper by freshman forward Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) at the 3:52 mark ended a nearly eight-minute scoring drought for the Wildcats, cutting the deficit to three points. Both teams came up empty over the next six possessions before Heinold buried a three-pointer at the 1:09 mark the knot the score at 52-52. The tying score came on a baseline out-of-bounds play as Heinold came off a screen to the right wing and accepted an inbounds pass from Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.); she didn't hesitate on the shot despite shooting just 1-for-8 from the field and 0-4 from three-point range prior to that. A three-point attempt by Gannon's Sydney Mitchell was off the mark on their ensuing possession, giving Daemen an opportunity to reclaim the lead. They did just that as Buchsenschutz drilled her third three-pointer of the game, this one from the top of the key with 27 seconds remaining. The Wildcats came up with another defensive stop and then shot 3-for-4 from the foul line in the waning seconds to seal the deal. Filbert shot 7-for-12 from the field and 3-for-5 from downtown to pace the Wildcats with a game-high 17 points. She has now reached double figures in five of six games this season, and in 15 of the last 25 games overall. Buchsenschutz was right at home playing in her native Pennsylvania, reaching double figures for the first time in her career with 13 points, while adding four assists, three steals and three rebounds. Heinold finished with seven points, and freshman forward Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) scored six points and grabbed a team-high seven boards. Ranaveya Richards (Albany, N.Y.) chipped in with three steals. Nicole LaCava led the Golden Knights with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Tori Obenrader came off the bench to record a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The first half featured eight lead changes, the last of which came on Filbert's three-pointer with 1:45 remaining in the second quarter which put the Wildcats on top 31-30. That bucket sparked a 16-4 run that stretched into the third quarter. The run was capped with a three-pointer by freshman guard Sydney Barney (Midland, Pa.) at the 4:48 mark which gave Daemen a 44-34 edge. Gannon was held without a field goal for more than seven minutes to start the third quarter, ending the drought on a three-pointer by Chelsea Rourke at the 2:53 mark. The shot sparked the hosts on an 18-3 run, and they forged ahead at 48-47 on a layup by Mitchell with over seven minutes remaining in the fourth. Obenrader's three-pointer at the 4:06 mark gave Gannon their largest lead of the game (52-47), but the Golden Knights were held scoreless from there, misfiring on their final six field goal attempts. Daemen shot just 30.8 percent from the field, connecting on 20-of-65 shots. Eight of their made field goals came from three-point range as they shot 32 percent from downtown. Gannon converted just 18-of-55 shots from the field (32.7%), including a chilly 3-for-18 from three-point range (16.7%). The Golden Knights out-rebounded Daemen 46-39, but committed 20 turnovers which turned into 16 Wildcat points. The win was Daemen's second in as many games this season against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponents. The Wildcats had previously defeated Mercyhurst University in a similarly tight affair (74-67) back on Nov. 14. Daemen's last win in the series, a 90-82 final score, came on Jan. 2, 2005 when Germany Jackson's 20 points led a quintet of double-figure scorers. Daemen's last win at the Hammermill Center came on Jan. 20, 1997 when they outlasted the Golden Knights 75-70. Daemen returns to action next Wednesday, Dec. 5 with their East Coast Conference opener at Roberts Wesleyan College. That game has been selected to be broadcast as part of the NCAA Division II Basketball Showcase which was announced today.
