Strong First Quarter Propels Bears Past Wildcats

Filbert Scores 14 In Loss To Regionally-Ranked NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Redshirt sophomore Meg Knollmeyer (Hampton, N.H.) registered her sixth double-double of the year to lead New York Institute of Technology to an 84-46 victory over Daemen College here today in East Coast Conference women's basketball action. NYIT, which is ranked fourth in the latest Division II Sports Information Directors Association (D2SIDA) East Region poll and is receiving votes in the D2SIDA national poll, has won nine of its last 10 games and improved to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the ECC. Daemen dropped to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Redshirt sophomore Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) paced a balanced scoring effort by Daemen with 14 points. Sophomore Caroline White (Fairport, N.Y.), who scored 19 points in a loss to Long Island University Post Friday night, added seven points, three rebounds and three steals.

Knollmeyer, who sat out the entire 2017-18 season due to injury after earning ECC Rookie of the Year two years ago, connected on 9-of-13 shots and totaled 19 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Shalie Frierson (Troy, N.Y.) added 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The host Bears scored the first 12 points of the game and took a 22-2 lead into the second quarter. NYIT outscored the Wildcats 12-6 over the first five minutes of the second quarter, and the Bears went on to take a 41-12 lead into halftime.

After shooting a combined 6-for-28 over the first two quarters, Daemen found its shooting touch in the third quarter—connecting on 8-of-17 shots—and outscored the Bears 22-20 during the frame. NYIT took a 61-34 lead into the fourth quarter and maintained a comfortable lead the remainder of the game.

Daemen shot just 30-percent (17-for-57) from the field overall and made just 5-of-21 from three-point land. The Wildcats went 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. NYIT shot 55-percent (33-of-60) for the game overall and went 11-for-23 from downtown. The hosts made 7-of-9 free throws. The Bears finished with a 34-32 edge in total rebounds, and the hosts also posted an advantage in points off turnovers (30-10), second-chance points (10-8), bench points (26-18) and points in the paint (38-18).

Daemen returns to action Wednesday (Dec. 19) when it travels to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on Le Moyne College in a non-league game. Le Moyne (7-2) is ranked ninth in the latest D2SIDA national poll.
