With the win, Mercyhurst improved to 2-0 on the young season. Today's match marked their first action since late September, and their first dual match since an 8-1 defeat of Allegheny College way back on Sept. 6. Daemen, which opened the spring season with a split of two road matches last weekend, dropped to 4-3 on the season. Mercyhurst opened the match with 8-1 and 8-2 wins in second and third doubles. Daemen's top pair of freshman Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and sophomore Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) made the Lakers' Nenad Terzic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Cormac McCooey (Dublin, Ireland) work before bowing 8-4 in first doubles. Terzic, a three-time first team All-PSAC selection, was again tested in singles play, this time by Wildcat freshman Tim Georg (Aschaffenburg, Germany). But, the MU veteran pulled through with a 7-5, 6-2 win atop the lineup. MU added straight-set singles wins by Ruairidh Fraser (Stirling, Scotland), McCooey, Unai Amilleta Gonzalez (Urnieta, Spain), Sebastian Pardo (Whitby, Ont.) and Luka Veselic (Zagreb, Croatia) in positions two through six, respectively. Fraser defeated DC junior David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) 6-1, 6-2. McCooey took down DC junior Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valcencia, Spain) 6-2, 6-2; it was Ruiz Martinez's first singles loss in dual match play this season. Amilleta Gonzalez was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Wilde. Pardo down freshman Pablo Martinez Hernandez (Huatulco, Mexico) 7-6, 6-1. And Veselic scored a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Williamson III. Daemen plays its first home match of the spring season next Tuesday, Feb. 20 when Division I Niagara comes to Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville.Print Friendly Version
