Mercyhurst, an affiliate of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference with now 92 wins in the last seven seasons, kept its 2017-18 record unblemished at 5-0. The Lakers were coming off an impressive 6-1 defeat of Division I Saint Bonaventure University last weekend. Daemen dropped to 8-10 with the loss. The Wildcats remain one win shy of matching the program record for wins in a season which was established during last year's 9-15 campaign. Today's match marked just the second all-time meeting between the Wildcats and Lakers, and the first since a 9-0 Laker win on April 7, 2013. Mercyhurst opened the match by sweeping through doubles play, including identical 8-0 counts in first and second doubles. The Wildcats' looked to avoid the sweep with a point in third doubles, but veterans Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y.) came up just short, dropping an 8-5 decision to freshmen Ivona Plecevic (Lazarevac, Serbia) and Athina Tsagkaraki (Siteia, Greece). In singles play, MU senior Saioa Gomez de Segura (Vitoria, Spain), the reigning PSAC Western Division Athlete of the Year, set the tone with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 1 slot over DC freshmen Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.). Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Dul, Brazil), Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.), Ringler, Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Park appeared in singles positions two through six, respectively, for Daemen, but none could break into the win column. Daemen returns to action next Friday, Feb. 23 when they host Clarion University for a dual match at Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville.Print Friendly Version
