Wildcats Claim First Place At Molloy Invitational

PLAINVIEW, N.Y. - For the second time in as many weekends, the Daemen College women's bowling team has earned first place honors in tournament action, doing so today at the Molloy College Lion Invitational held at AMF Plainview Lanes. The Wildcats won three of their five Baker format matches today, and claimed first place by leading all 10 tournament participants in total pinfall (4,516) and pins-per-frame Baker scoring average (180.6). Daemen edged second-place Adelphi University (4,487 total pinfall; 179.5 average) in both categories.

Freshman Katlyn Newberry (Rochester, N.Y.) and sophomore Katie Good (Hamburg, N.Y.) were each named to the all-tournament team for their efforts today. Newberry finished second among all participating players with a 19.02 pins-per-frame scoring average. Good finished tied for fifth with an 18.42 pins-per-frame average. It's the second all-tournament team honor for both Newberry and Good this season. Newberry had previously been named to the all-tournament team at the Medaille Invitational in early November when she led the Wildcats to a second-place finish. Good was an all-tournament team honoree just last weekend when leading Daemen to a first-place finish at the Brother Patrick Lacey Memorial Tournament host by Saint Vincent College.

Sophomore Rachel Steele (Rensselaer, N.Y.) chipped in with a 17.4 pins-per-frame average today. Steele, Newberry, redshirt junior Kaitlyn O'Hara (Clarence Center, N.Y.) and freshman Adrianna Pencek (Dunkirk, N.Y.) each bowled in all 50 frames today.

Wins today came against Saint Peter's University (893-869), Medaille College (992-819) and Wilmington University (922-880). The Wildcats dropped matches to nationally-ranked Adelphi (888-881) and tournament host Molloy (971-820). The seven-pin loss to Adelphi, ranked 11th in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association poll, was Daemen's closest to a nationally-ranked opponent in team history.

Today's results push the Wildcats to 27-10 on the season, extending their team record for wins.

The Wildcats are back in action Sunday with another one-day tournament, the Molloy College Baker Challenge. Tournament play gets underway at 9 a.m. with Daemen taking on fellow East Coast Conference member Saint Thomas Aquinas College.
