Stasiuk Sets New Benchmark But Wildcats Fall At Edinboro

BOX SCORE

ERIE, Pa. - Freshman Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) set a new team record with her 15th singles win of the season, but it wasn't enough as Daemen College fell by the slimmest of margins (5-4) to Edinboro University in non-conference women's tennis action today at the Westwood Racquet Club.

Stasiuk, who tied Hayle Scanlan's (Indianapolis, Ind.) team record for singles wins in a season in yesterday's loss to Le Moyne College, surpassed the mark today by defeating EU's Roxanna Yeh (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) in the third singles position. Stasiuk has now won three consecutive singles matches to sit at 15-10 on the season.

The Wildcats also picked up singles wins today from veterans Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y.). Ringler, who recently became just the second player in team history with at least 40 singles wins, bested EU's Jelena Vucenovic (Niagara Falls, Ont.) in three sets (6-2, 2-6, 6-2). Ringler sits at 12-10 in singles play this season, one win shy of her career high. Park cruised past Shelby Hutton (Palmyra, N.Y.) 6-4, 6-0 in the sixth singles position.

Unfortunately, it was going to take four singles wins to get the job done today after the Wildcats fell behind 2-1 following doubles play. Ringler teamed with freshman Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Sul, Brazil) to win 8-2 in second doubles over Yeh and Marija Tmusic (Belgrade, Serbia).

The loss drops Daemen to 9-12 on the season, and it keeps the Widcats in search of their 10th win which would set a new team record. Edinboro, which is coming off an 11-7 campaign last season, improved to 3-1 this year.

Daemen returns to non-conference action on Monday, March 5 when visiting Rochester Institute of Technology.
