Wildcats Drop Dual Match To RIT

BOX SCORE

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team will have to wait for another opportunity to become the first group in program history to achieve a 10-win season after suffering a 7-2 loss today to Rochester Institute of Technology at Gordon Field House. RIT, an affiliate of NCAA Division III and the Liberty League, improved to 4-2 on the season with today's win. Daemen, which has won a program-record nine matches for the second straight year, fell to 9-13.

The freshmen duo of Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) gutted out a 9-8 win over RIT's Amelia Ying (Marlton, N.J.) and Shayna Ginster (Webster, N.Y.) in the first doubles position, improving to 4-3 as a pair this season. It was Yuen's team-leading 13th doubles win of the year, becoming just the third player in team history with at least that many doubles wins in a season.

But, that's the only point Daemen could muster in doubles play as RIT took a 2-1 lead in the match with wins in the second and third doubles positions. Claire Casalnova (Mars, Pa.) and Kristen Zablonski (Orchard Park, N.Y.) outlasted DC's Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Sul, Brazil) 8-6. An identical 8-6 score decided the third doubles match between RIT's Annie Steinbrink (Upper Dublin, Pa.) and Maddy Price (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Daemen's Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y.).

In singles play, RIT shut the door with wins in the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth positions. Ying, Ginster, Zablonski and Steinbrink picked up their second points of the match, and Julia Smolowitz (Marlborough, Mass.) chipped in for the final point.

Only Stasiuk could break through in singles play for the Wildcats. She defeated Casalnova 6-1, 6-3 in the third singles position. The win extended Stasiuk's team record for singles wins in a season as she's now 16-10 in her rookie campaign. Stasiuk has won four consecutive singles matches.

Daemen is now idle until facing Fairmont State on Saturday, April 7.
