Wildcats Cruise Past Cougars In Return To Win Column

BOX SCORE

HAINES CITY, Fla. - The Daemen College men's tennis team snapped a six-match slide with a 9-0 shutout victory this morning over the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) in a non-conference dual match held at the Lake Eva Tennis Center. It was the Wildcats' fourth win by shutout this season.

Daemen, which is in the midst of a five-match spring break trip, picked up its first win in The Sunshine State since an 8-1 defeat of the University of Northwestern on March 10, 2015. The win pushes Daemen's record to 5-8 this season. USF, which is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)  and the Crossroads League, fell to 4-14 on the season. The match was just Daemen's second-ever against an NAIA opponent, and their first since an 8-1 loss to Southeastern University on March 13, 2015.

The Wildcats opened the match by winning all three points available in doubles action. Senior Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich.) and sophomore Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) teamed up to win 8-3 atop the doubles lineup, taking down USF's top pair of Jay Stanchin (Leo, Ind.) and Tyler Christlieb (Leo, Ind.). Daemen juniors David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) were 8-6 winners in second doubles over Alex Stavretis (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Tony Tomeh (Fort Wayne, Ind.). And, freshman Pablo Martinez Hernandez (Huatulco, Mexico) paired with classmate Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) to oust Reggie Garrett (Bluffton, Ind.) and Jake Garrett (Bluffton, Ind.) 8-2 in third doubles.

Needing just two points in singles play to secure the victory, the Wildcats didn't stop there and made it a clean sweep with all six remaining points. All but one match was decided in straight sets. Gonzalez Villegas made just his second appearance this season in the No. 1 singles slot, and he capitalized with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Stanchin. Ruiz Martinez won 6-2, 6-0 over Stavretis in second singles. Wilde took down Christlieb in third singles (6-1, 6-2). Martinez Hernandez was a 6-4, 6-3 winner in fourth singles over Tomeh. Veitengruber skated past Reggie Garrett (6-0, 6-1). And, sophomore James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y.), seeing his first action of the trip, completed the sweep with a three-set win (6-2, 6-7, 1-0) over Jake Garrett in sixth singles.

Veitengruber's singles win gives him a team-leading 10 this season, the third time in his career that he's reached double figures. Daemen's all-time leader in singles wins, Veitengruber now boasts 44 career singles wins. The Daemen senior, who also recorded his 31st career doubles win, pulled within two of John LeMar's program record for career doubles victories (33). Veitengruber is Daemen's all-time leader in combined singles/doubles wins with 75.

Daemen returns to action tomorrow (March 15) with their only true road match of the trip. The Wildcats face Sunshine State Conference affiliate Eckerd College in St. Petersburg with the match scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
