The Penmen, winners of the last two Northeast-10 Conference championships and holders of six NCAA Tournament berths in the last seven seasons, improved to 8-6 with today's win. Daemen dropped to 5-14. Ruiz Martinez has now won six of his last seven singles matches, improving to 14-7 on the season individually. Today's win, a three-set grinder (7-5, 4-6, 1-0) over SNHU's Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) in the second singles position, lifted Ruiz Martinez past the previous record of 13 wins established by teammate Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich.) during the 2015-16 season. It also came against an opponent, Marreiros, who was a first team All-NE-10 honoree last season. Ruiz Martinez, who became Daemen's first-ever All-East Coast Conference honoree last season, is now 24-14 in singles play in his two seasons for the Wildcats (fourth all-time in career singles wins). SNHU cruised to a 3-0 lead in the match after sweeping through doubles play. Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) and Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) dropped just a single game while winning (8-1) in the first doubles position over DC's Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany). Marreiros teamed with his brother, Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal), to defeat Ruiz Martinez and David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) in the second doubles position 8-3. And, Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) paired with Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) to oust Veitengruber and Pablo Martinez Hernandez (Huatulco, Mexico) 8-1. Fernandes, the reigning NE-10 Player of the Year, picked up his second point of the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win in first singles over Gonzalez Villegas. Miguel Marreiros (3-6, 6-4, 1-0 in No. 3), Aubron (7-5, 6-2 in No. 4), van Biezen (6-1, 6-3 in No. 5) and Reichentahl (6-2, 6-3 in No. 6) all made it a two-point day for themselves as well. Daemen returns to conference play this Tuesday when hosting rival Roberts Wesleyan College at Miller Tennis Center beginning at 2:30 p.m.Print Friendly Version
