Ringler Leads Wildcats To Record 10th Win On Senior Day

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Playing in the final home match of her career, senior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) recorded wins in both singles and doubles play this evening to lead the Daemen College women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over Fairmont State University in non-league action at Miller Tennis Center. With the win, Daemen improves to 10-13 on the season and establishes a new record for wins in a season. Fairmont State, an affiliate of the Mountain East Conference, saw their three-match winning streak go by the wayside while falling to 9-7 on the season.

The Wildcats got off to a 2-1 lead in the match after winning two of the three doubles matches. Ringler and junior Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) got Daemen on the board as the duo cruised to an 8-1 win in the second doubles position over FSU's Hayley Hatfield (Holden, W. Va.) and Isadora Matos (Curitiba, Brazil). The Falcons came back to knot the match at 1-1 with Heloisa Adams (Porto Alegre, Brazil) and Trinite' Klamadji's (Niamey, Niger) 8-6 win in the first doubles position over Wildcat freshmen Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.) and Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Sul, Brazil). The pivotal third doubles match went the way of the Wildcats as Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) scored an 8-4 win over Katelyn Shirkey (Hurricane, W. Va.) and Kate Lauerman (South Charleston, W. Va.).

Shifting to singles play, Daemen recorded the first three decisions to seal the dual-match victory. Robins opened up with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Hatfield in the fifth position. Stasiuk followed up with a win in the third position after her opponent, Matos, was forced to retire. Park's 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Geena Lammertin (Hobart, Ind.) in the sixth singles position clinched the record-setting win for the Wildcats.

FSU would pick up wins by Klamadji (6-4, 6-4 in first singles) and Adams (6-4, 6-1 in second singles) to narrow the margin. But, fittingly so on senior day, it was Ringler who provided the final margin with her 6-0, 6-0 win over Bailey Edeburn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the fourth position.

Ringler, who was honored in a pre-match ceremony commemorating her achievements over her four-year career, now has 83 career wins (combined singles and doubles), second all-time for the Wildcats. Her singles win this evening was her 13th of the season, tying her career-high which she set as a freshman. Her doubles win this evening was also her 13th of the season, and that sets a new single-season personal benchmark. It was also the 40th doubles win of her career as she becomes just the second player in team history to reach that milestone.

She wasn't alone in reaching milesontes. Stasiuk's win in singles play was her team-leading 17th of the season, extending her single-season team record. With wins in both singles and doubles play tonight, Robins moved into a tie for third on Daemen's all-time combined wins list with 57 for her career.

Add it all up and you get the Wildcats' 10th win of the season, the first time in team history that they've reached double figures. The Wildcats have won at least eight matches in five consecutive seasons, including the previous record of nine wins set last season.

The Wildcats close out their 2017-18 season by visiting Jefferson University in Philadelphia next Sunday, April 15.
