The win pushes Daemen's record to 7-16 this season, matching the team record for wins in a season which had been accomplished during both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. Millersville, which competes in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, fell to 2-14 on the season. The Wildcats established a 3-0 lead in the match after sweeping through doubles action. Senior Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich.) and junior Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) put Daemen on the board with an 8-3 win in the second doubles position over MU's Jose Alcazar (Malaga, Spain) and Andy Beer (Spring Lake, N.J.). Junior David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and freshman Tim Georg (Aschaffenburg, Germany) then earned an 8-3 win in the third doubles slot over MU's Brandon Miller (Spring City, Pa.) and Erich Nagel (York, Pa.). Atop the lineup, sophomore Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) and freshman Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) completed the sweep with an 8-6 downing of the Marauders' Peter Landis (Lewisberry, Pa.) and Ben Fellman (Rockville, Md.). In singles play, only Landis got on the board for the hosts. He defeated Gonzalez Villegas in the first position 7-6, 6-1. Daemen picked up points at second, third, fourth, fifth and singles singles: Ruiz Martinez defeated Fellman (6-1, 6-3); Georg defeated Alcazar (6-0, 6-1); Wilde defeated Miller (6-1, 6-1); Veitengruber defeated Nagel (6-1, 6-1); and sophomore James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y.) defeated Beer (6-3, 6-0). Several milestones were reached during the course of the match... * Veitengruber tied John LeMar's team record for career doubles wins with his 33rd. The win came in the 100th doubles match of Veitengruber's career as he becomes the first player in team history to reach that milestone. The win was also Veitengruber's 10th in doubles play this season, establishing a new career-high. He also established a new career-high with his 14th singles win of the season today. The team's lone senior, Veitengruber now boasts a team record 81 combined singles/doubles wins in his career. * Doubles wins by Gonzalez Villegas, Ruiz Martinez and Williamson III give the trio 12 apiece this season; that ties Gonzalez Villegas' team record which he established last season. Gonzalez Villegas' doubles win also moved him into sole possession of third place on Daemen's all-time doubles wins list with 31 for his career. * With wins in both singles and doubles play today, Ruiz Martinez moved past Adam Kerr for fifth place on Daemen's all-time combined singles/doubles wins list. Ruiz Martinez now has 46 wins since joining the program midway through the 2016-17 season. * Fabian Wilde won his 14th singles match of the season today, joining Veitengruber and Ruiz Martinez as the only players in team history with at least that many singles victories in a season. All three have accomplished the feat this season. Daemen will look for their program-record eighth win of the season in tomorrow's 2017-18 finale against Jefferson University. Print Friendly Version
