Daemen, which was coming off its first-ever victory over rival Roberts Wesleyan College earlier this week, fell to 6-15 overall and 1-3 in league play. Despite the loss, the Wildcats remain in the hunt for what would be their first-ever ECC Tournament berth. Meanwhile, NYIT (8-0, 3-0 ECC) kept their unblemished overall and ECC records intact, keeping pace with idle Queens College (14-0, 4-0 ECC) which sits atop the ECC standings. The highly-touted Bears, a team that's earned six consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, opened today's match by sweeping through doubles play. Matej Selecky (Bratislava, Slovakia) teamed with Alexandre Martinez (Paris, France) to score an 8-3 win in the top doubles position, defeating the DC duo of Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) and Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.). Rares Ispas (Focsani, Romania) and Kevin Huynh (Astoria, N.Y.) were 8-4 winners in the third doubles position over DC's Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich.) and Pablo Martinez Hernandez (Huatulco, Mexico). An 8-6 win in the second position by Maxton Cook (Southampton, England) and Francisco Caldas (Braga, Portugal) over DC juniors David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) completed the sweep and gave the guests a 3-0 lead in the match. Needing just two points in singles play to seal the dual-match victory, the Bears got four. Selecky (6-1, 7-5 in first singles), Caldas (6-2, 7-6 in second singles) and Martinez (7-5, 6-1 in fifth singles) each earned their second points of the match. Freshman Sergio Fernandez (Villanueva de la Cañada, Spain) provided the seventh point for NYIT with his 6-1, 7-5 win in the sixth singles position. Freshman Tim Georg provided the highlight of the day for the Wildcats, defeating Ispas, the ECC Preseason Player of the Year, in the third singles position. Georg dropped the opening set (6-7), but rebounded to win the next two (6-4, 1-0) to take the match - his second straight singles victory which puts up at 8-16 on the season. Wilde was also victorious in singles play. The Daemen sophomore defeated Cook 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 in the fourth singles position for his second straight singles win. At 12-13 now in singles play this season, Wilde becomes just the fourth player in team history with at least 12 singles wins in a season. Despite losing his match in the fifth singles position, Veitengruber, the Wildcats' all-time leader in combined (79) and singles (47) wins, reached another milestone as it marked his 100th career singles match, the first player in team history to do so. Daemen's postseason fate will hang in the balance when they face the University of the District of Columbia (6-6, 1-2 ECC) in their next match, slated for 11 a.m. Friday, April 13 at Miller Tennis Center. Print Friendly Version
