Three Student-Athletes Among Trustee Scholarship Recipients

AMHERST, N.Y. - Three Daemen College student-athletes are among a group of eight first-year students to receive 2018 Trustee Scholarships, the college's most prestigious academic scholarship that is renewable throughout their undergraduate studies.

First-year student-athletes among the 2018 Daemen Trustee Scholars are:

Ryan James	Buffalo, N.Y.	City Honors HS	Psychology	Women's Cross Country / Track & Field
Erik Matthews	Galway, N.Y.	Galway HS	Physical Therapy	Men's Soccer
Nicole Schmidt	Vienna, Va.	George C. Marshall HS	Political Science	Women's Soccer

To be considered for the Trustee Scholarship, prospective first-year students are nominated by Daemen President Gary A. Olson to apply for the awards and then participate in interviews with college faculty and staff. More than 175 students from Arizona, California, New Hampshire, Texas, Virginia, and other states from across the country competed for this year's coveted scholarships.

Selection is based on academic achievement, vision for self and society, enthusiasm and inspiration, academic and personal discipline, and leadership ability. Both intellect and character are considered, and selected scholars are those who have the potential to make a difference in their careers and in the Daemen and external communities.

"An important recruiting goal for each of our programs is to attract the best and brightest student-athletes to Daemen College, those that will represent the college well and demonstrate leadership potential," said director of athletics Traci Murphy. "With nearly half of this year's Trustee Scholarship recipients being student-athletes, it's evident that our coaches have truly embraced that philosophy. I want to congratulate Ryan, Erik and Nicole for receiving these prestigious scholarships, and I am looking forward to everything that they can bring to Daemen, both in the classroom and in their chosen sports."
