In their tournament opener, the Wildcats fell to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference member Seton Hill University (20-25, 25-27, 18-25). In the nightcap, Daemen's first-ever meeting with the University of Southern Indiana went the way of the Screaming Eagles (20-25, 21-25, 20-25). Despite the losses, head coach Stephanie Albano was encouraged by the performance of her team today. "We played much better than last week. We ran into two pretty good teams and we competed hard all day," said the third-year mentor. The Wildcats got off to a rough start offensively against Seton Hill, committing 10 hitting errors and attacking at just a .025 clip in the opening set. But, they rebounded with 18 kills and just five errors in the second (.295 hitting percentage), helping them establish a 24-21. SHU was not to be denied however, as the Griffins rallied for six of the next seven points to win the set. In the third, SHU opened up a 5-0 lead and Daemen never got the deficit under three for the remainder of the set. Sophomore outside hitter Viktoria Farian, a third team All-PSAC selection in 2017, led the way for SHU with a match-high 14 kills. Farian's offensive production came on 35 attempts as she hit .314 for the match, while also adding 12 digs. Daemen was led by freshman outside hitter Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) who recorded 11 kills, the first time in her young career that she's put up double figures. Sophomore right side/middle hitter Jenn Heritz (Granger, Ind.) chipped in with 10 kills. Freshman setter Isa McCaffrey (North Royalton, Ohio) notched 31 assists while playing for the first time as a collegian in her home state. Sophomore defensive specialist Ali Greenwood (North Aurora, Ill.) matched her career-high with 22 digs. Against USI, the Wildcats were better offensively (37 kills, .171 hitting percentage), but they couldn't find a way to slow down the Screaming Eagles' offensive attack. USI notched 44 kills and hit .301 as a team. The topped a .300 hitting percentage in both the first (.346) and third sets (.364). The formula was no secret for Great Lakes Valley Conference member USI. With their top two offensive threats from last season returning, they were going to them early and often as Elexis Coleman (13 kills) and Mikaila Humphrey (12 kills) combined for 25 kills with just two hitting errors and a .451 hitting percentage. Heritz countered with a season-best 16 kills for the Wildcats, one shy of her career-best effort. Tirzah Peters (Amherst, N.Y.) and Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y.) split 14 kills between them, and combined for a .323 hitting percentage. McCaffrey registered 34 assists, while Georgia Wicker (Woodstock, Ill.) was the lone Daemen player to notch double-figure digs with 12. The Wildcats will look to rebound when tournament play resumes on Saturday, and they'll try to do so against familiar opponents in Notre Dame College (11:15 a.m.) and tournament host Malone (3:45 p.m.). Daemen, Notre Dame and Malone were all once part of the now-defunct American Mideast Conference during their days as members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Like Daemen, both Notre Dame and Malone have since transitioned to NCAA Division II. The Wildcats will be meeting both opponents for the first time since 2010.
