WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas College this afternoon at Miller Tennis Center. Daemen dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the East Coast Conference, while STAC improved to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the league.
The visiting Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the match after scoring a pair of wins in doubles play to open the match. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.
Daemen's top duo of Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) suffered a 6-4 loss to STAC's Katarina Lopez and Maya O'Brien at No. 1 doubles. The visitors secured the doubles point after Amelie Meyers and Chiara Dittrich defeated DC's Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) and Alliya Foster (Bronx, N.Y.) at No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-0.
Stasiuk and Robins secured Daemen's two points during the singles competition. Stasiuk, who has prevailed in her last three singles matches, outlasted Lopez at the No. 1 spot by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Stasiuk who posted a program-record 18 singles wins last year as a freshman, improved to 4-1 on the year at No. 1 singles. Robins defeated Anna Ristova by a score of 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. With the win Robins has now posted 60 combined wins over her career (35 singles, 25 doubles) and becomes just the third player in program history to register 60 or more combined wins.
STAC, which is now 6-0 all-time against Daemen, secured the victory by winning the final four singles matches. The Spartans posted straight-set wins at No. 3 and 4 singles, and took the fifth and sixth singles by default.
Daemen returns to action Friday (Sept. 28) when it hosts Salem University in a non-league match.
