Wildcats Take Down Defending ECC Champs

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - Allison Post (Windosr, Calif.) recorded career-highs of 13 kills and 15 digs to lead the Daemen College women's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory today over Molloy College in an East Coast Conference match at Quealy Gymnasium.

Daemen remained unbeaten in league play with today's victory, pushing their ECC mark to 4-0. It's the first time that Daemen has started the conference slate with four straight victories since joining the ECC six seasons ago. The Wildcats have won eight of their last 10 matches overall to sit at 10-8 on the season. Today's win came against a Molloy team that was picked first in the ECC preseason poll after capturing their first-ever conference championship last season. The Lions dropped to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in league play with their loss today.

Post was effective on both sides of the ball today for the Wildcats as she registered the first double-double of her career. The 6-foot outside hitter is averaging 2.77 kills and 3.14 digs per set over the last four matches. She led a balanced offense and defense today as three other players contributed at least eight kills and four other players reached double-figure digs.

Daemen's middle hitter tandem of Cristina Apostol (Bucharest, Romania) and Tirzah Peters (Amherst, N.Y.) also continued to produce. Apostol notched 11 kills, her seventh match this season in double figures, while Peters put down eight kills to go with a team-high two blocks. The two combined on a .469 hitting percentage today.

Junior outside hitter Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y.) and freshman setter Isa McCaffrey (North Royalton, Ohio) also posted double-doubles in the match. For Ballou, it was the 14th double-double of her career as she registered 12 kills and a season-high 13 digs. McCaffrey continued her stellar rookie season with a match-high 38 assists to go with 10 digs, marking her third double-double of the season. A three-time ECC Setter of the Week honoree already this season, McCaffrey has now posted 30 or more assists in 11 straight matches.

Defensive specalists Ali Greenwood (North Aurora, Ill.) and Georgia Wicker (Woodstock, Ill.) also chipped in with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

The Daemen defensive effort limited Molloy to just 25 kills and a .143 hitting percentage in the match. Kacey Affrunti (six kills) and Carly Banks (eight kills) paced the Lions offense. Affrunti came into the match ranked second in the league in kills per set (3.41) while Banks ranked fourth (3.08). Sophia Smith contributed 21 assists and Jessica Fischetti notched 19 digs for the Lions.

After trading points early in the first set, Daemen took the lead at 10-9 on a Molloy service error, and they would not relinquish it for the remainder of the set. The Widlcats took a 17-13 lead on an Apostol kill, but Molloy battled back to tie the score at 20-20. Daemen re-established control by winning four of the next five points before Ballou closed out the set with a kill off an assist by McCaffrey. The Wildcats powered down 19 kills and hit .304 in the set.

The second set was tightly contested as well. The Wildcats used a timely 7-1 run to turn a 17-17 tie into a 24-18 edge. The Wildcats were aided by a trio of Molloy hitting errors at the outset of the run, and then got consecutive kills by Peters and Post (two), as well as a service ace from McCaffrey. A kill from redshirt junior Courtney Bernard (Lancaster, Ohio) closed the set, giving Daemen a 2-0 lead in the match.

Bernard, Post (two) and Peters all notched kills in a 6-1 run to open the third set. The Wildcat lead ballooned to 10 points (21-11) after a 6-0 run later in the set. A kill by Post put the Lions on the brink, trailing 24-13. Molloy battled back with four straight points, but a service error ended the set and the match.

Daemen looks for the sweep of this weekend road trip when they face Queens College tomorrow afternoon.
