Warriors Blank Wildcats In Non-League Affair

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The Daemen College women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Merrimack College in a non-conference matchup here this afternoon. Daemen dropped to 0-7, while the host Warriors improved to 6-3. It marked the first-ever meeting between Daemen and Merrimack, which is a long-time member of the Northeast-10 Conference.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the match after scoring a pair of wins in doubles play to open the match. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.

Daemen's top duo of Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) suffered a 6-1 loss to MC's Mana Seifaei  and Kristina Calistro at No. 1 doubles. The visitors secured the doubles point after Cassie Restrepo and Rosemary Campanella defeated DC's Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) and Alliya Foster (Bronx, N.Y.) at No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-0.

Merrimack secured the victory by winning the first three singles matches. Stasiuk suffered a 6-0, 6-3 setback to Campanella at No. 1 singles, while Robins fell to Hope Salts (6-0, 6-1) at No. 2 singles. Mia Briggs and Meredith Wedro also picked up straight-set wins for the Warriors at No. 3 and No. 4 singles respectively. The Warriors took the fifth and sixth singles by default.

Daemen returns to action Thursday (Oct. 3) when it travels to Niagara University for a non-league tilt. It will mark the fourth-straight year that the Wildcats have squared off against the Division I Purple Eagles. Niagara has prevailed in each of the previous three meetings.
