Millersville, an affiliate of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, took a 1-0 lead in the match after scoring a pair of wins in doubles play to open the match. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory. Daemen's top duo of Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) bested MU's Katina Jones and Jasmine Morris 6-2 in the No. 1 doubles position. But, The Marauders picked up wins in the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles positions to secure the point. As the match shifted to singles play, Stasiuk made her debut in the No. 1 position in the lineup, and she outlasted Jones, an All-PSAC selection last season, in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 10-5). Winning in singles play is a familiar sight for Stasiuk who set the program record last season with 18 singles victories. But, that's all the Wildcats would get as MU's Morris, Megan Rovenolt and Kelsey Heckert secured wins in the second, third and fourth singles positions. The Marauders added points in the fifth and sixth singles positions by default. The match not only marked the start of the 2018-19 season, but was also the debut for Daemen head coach Kerry McDermott. The veteran coach was hired over the summer after spending the last 36 seasons as the head men's tennis coach at the University of Nebraska. "I was very proud of the way our team competed today," said McDermott. "Effort is the one thing they have control over during a match so that was absolutely encouraging to see. Christina and Jessica beat a very good team at number one doubles, and they played solid throughout the match. They compliment each other's game, and for the first time playing together, they showed good composure." Robins' doubles win gives her 58 combined wins (singles and doubles) in her career, pushing her into sole possession of third on the program's all-time wins list. The team's lone senior, Robins opened the season in a tie for third with former teammate Karli Hollins. Daemen is back in dual match action next Tuesday, September 11 when they'll host Roberts Wesleyan College in an East Coast Conference contest.
