Wildcats Suffer Heartbreaking Overtime Loss At Le Moyne

Dolphins Score With 4:44 left in Double OT To Earn 3-2 Win

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A goal by sophomore Joe Falcone (Manlius, N.Y.) with 4:44 left in the second and final overtime period lifted the Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Daemen College here today in non-conference action.

Le Moyne, which is ranked eighth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II East Region poll, remained unbeaten on the year at 3-0-0. The Dolphins are a member of the Northeast-10 Conference and were picked fifth in the NE-10 preseason poll. Daemen, which was looking for its first-ever victory over Le Moyne, dropped to 1-2-0.

After a scoreless first overtime period, a Daemen turnover near midfield led to Falcone's golden goal. Falcone and junior midfielder Pablo Fernandez (Aviles, Spain) executed a nice give-and-go inside the Daemen box and Falcone slotted the ball into the lower right side of the net from 12 yards out.

The Dolphins opened the scoring just under 24 minutes into the contest after second-year graduate student Marek Weber (Fulda, Germany) scored his third goal of the season off a pass from junior forward Salar Faryar (Frankfurt, Germany).

Daemen tied the game at 1-1 early in the second half after a cross by redshirt sophomore Joe Keem (Amherst, N.Y.) found the foot of sophomore Finn Krueger (Neuried, Germany), who tapped the ball into the goal for his first marker of the season.

Le Moyne regained the lead just 84 seconds later. In the game for just 27 seconds, freshman midfielder Noah Moothedan (Lutz, Fla.) crossed the ball into the box from the right sideline. Faryar charged in and headed the ball into the back of the net from four yards out.

The Wildcats answered once again with just over 27 minutes remaining in regulation. Off a cross from the left side by Giacomo Bacigalupo (Lavagna, Italy), Krueger used his chest to record his second goal of the day from the near left post. It marked the first multi-goal game of Kruger's two-year career.

The Dolphins had two solid chances to score in the final minute of regulation play. Sophomore back Robert Rohrhirsch (Garching bei München, Germany) had a shot saved by Daemen goalkeeper Philipp Schmidt (Larh, Germany) with 28 seconds left, and then with Schmidt out of position Faryar had a shot from five yards out turned away at the goal line by Bacigalupo.

Schmidt went the distance in net for the Wildcats and made a season-high six saves. Junior Jerry Lewandowski (Clifton Park, N.Y.) stopped three shots for the Dolphins, who are now 7-0-0 all time against the Wildcats.

Daemen returns to action Monday (Sept. 10) when it hosts Gannon University in a non league match.
