Strong Second Half Propels #14 Daemen Past Queens

AMHERST, N.Y. - Andrew Sischo (Guilderland, N.Y.) and Quinn Lee Yaw (Jamestown, N.Y.) led a strong second-half effort as the Daemen College men's basketball team ran to an 80-65 win over Queens College in East Coast Conference action here today. After going to the locker room with the game knotted at 28-28, Daemen erupted for 52 points and shot 67.7 percent from the field (21-for-31) in the second half.

Daemen, which is ranked 14th in the latest Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) national media poll, snapped a two-game slide and improved to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in league play. Queens dropped to 3-13 overall and 3-3 in ECC games. The Knights were looking for a sweep of their annual trek through Western New York after defeating Roberts Wesleyan College 95-90 on Friday evening in Rochester.

Sischo and Lee Yaw went to work on the interior, helping Daemen to a 48-22 advantage in points in the paint. The Wildcats racked up 38 points in the paint in the second half alone. Sischo scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the period, and all of Lee Yaw's 15 points came after halftime. Sischo, who has now topped 20 points in eight games this season, shot 11-for-17 from the field and added seven rebounds and two steals. Lee Yaw, the ECC leader in field goal percentage, was efficient again today, shooting 6-for-9 from the field, including a trio of thunderous second-half dunks. He added four rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot as well.

Jeff Redband (Batavia, N.Y.) continued his strong play for the Wildcats as well. The reigning ECC Player of the Week canned 7-of-13 shots, including 3-of-5 from downtown, and totaled 19 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Redband has now made at least one three-pointer in 19 straight games. He entered the weekend ranked third in the country for three-point shooting accuracy, and he presently leads the ECC in three-pointers made (46) and percentage (52.1%).

Senior guard Darius Garvin (Elmira, N.Y.) came off the bench to score a season-high eight points for the Wildcats.

Keenan Gorski (12 points) and Elijah Bovell (12 points) combined for 24 points to pace the Knights. Gorski knocked down a pair of three-pointers and shot 4-for-9 from the field. Bovell, the Knights' leading scorer this season, was jus 5-for-14 from the field and 1-for-6 from three-point range. Tyrese Crosdale added 10 points, and Kevin Buron came off the bench to haul in a game-high eight rebounds.

Sischo's layup at the 8:46 mark of the opening half put the Wildcats ahead 20-12, but the Wildcats got sluggish offensively from there. Queens outscored Daemen 16-8 over the final eight minutes of the period. A three-pointer by Buron with 1:38 left gave the Knights their first lead of the contest at 26-25. Redband responded with a trifecta for the Wildcats, but Bovell's short jumper evened the count (28-28) before the break.

The Knights enjoyed a bit of a three-point barrage at the outset of the second half, getting triples from Jordan Curtis, Gorski and Bovell over the first two-and-a-half minutes to open up a 37-34 lead. But, Daemen kept attacking the interior of Queens' defense, and used a 20-3 run to seize control. Sischo accounted for eight points in the run, and 16 of the Daemen points came in the paint. Nick Petrucelli's (Hicksville, N.Y.) old-fashioned three-point play at the 11:21 mark put Daemen ahead 54-40.

Queens never got closer than 11 points down the stretch as the Wildcats switched to a zone defense that quelled their shooting from behind the arc. The Daemen lead grew to 24 points (73-49) when Lee Yaw threw down a dunk with 4:31 to play. After Queens got within 76-65 on a layup by Crosdale, the Wildcats closed things out with back-to-back layups by Garvin and Sischo.

Daemen shot 50 percent for the game (33-for-66), the sixth time this season they've made at least half their attempts from the field. Queens was held to 40.7 percent shooting (24-for-59) in the game. The Knights, who were averaging just 6.5 made three-pointers per game, shot 9-for-32 from deep (28.1%) today. They went just 1-for-8 from downtown after the switch to a zone defense called by Daemen bench boss Mike MacDonald who now sits one win shy of 350 for his career.

With the win, Daemen improved to 10-2 all-time against the Knights. The Wildcats have won five straight in the series. It also marked Daemen's 90th win at Lumsden Gymnasium since the start of the 2011-12 season, against just 14 defeats in that span. Daemen is 8-1 at home this season.

Daemen, which is also ranked first in the D2SIDA East Region media poll, will return to action next Friday, Jan. 18 when they visit Mercy College for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
