Egan And Titus Lead Wildcats Past Mavericks

Daemen Improves To 4-2 in the ECC With Third-Straight Win

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Senior Erin Egan (Williamsville, N.Y.) scored a career-high 19 points and freshman Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) registered her second-straight double-double with 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to lead Daemen College to a 72-47 victory over Mercy College here tonight in East Coast Conference women's basketball action.

Daemen extended its winning streak to three-straight games and improved to 7-8 overall and 4-2 in the ECC. The Wildcats are now in a tie with the University of Bridgeport for third place in the ECC standings. Mercy suffered its tenth-straight loss and dropped to 3-13 overall and 0-6 in the league.

Egan, whose previous career-high was 17 points, connected on 9-of-15 shots and scored 13 of her 19 points in the first half. Titus, the reigning ECC Player of the Week, connected on 8-of-12 shots and collected one more rebound than her previous career-high (15). Redshirt sophomore Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) scored 12 points in the second half and finished with 16 points and a team-high five assists.

Freshman Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md.) paced the Mavericks with 14 points. Sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J.), who entered the game averaging a league-high 18.5 points, connected on just 4-of-15 shots and also netted 14 points.

Daemen held a 7-4 lead midway through the first quarter and the visitors closed out the opening frame with a 7-1 run to take a 14-5 lead in the second quarter.

The Wildcats increased the lead to 15 points, 23-8, after sophomore Caroline White (Fairport, N.Y.) drilled a triple and Egan followed with a steal and layup at the 7:42 mark the second quarter. The Daemen lead was 17 points, 31-14, with just over three minutes left before halftime, when a layup by Brown sparked the hosts on a quarter-ending 8-3 spurt that made the score 34-22 Daemen at the break.

Daemen denied Mercy any shot of a comeback after the Wildcats outscored the Mavericks 18-7 over the first seven minutes of the third quarter. A layup by junior Ranaveya Richards (Albany, N.Y.) with 3:12 left in the quarter capped the decisive run and gave the Wildcats a 52-29 lead. Daemen took a 56-37 lead into the fourth quarter and the lead eventually ballooned to 28-points, 69-41, after Richards made one-of-two free throws with just over three minutes left to play.

Daemen shot 58-percent (15-for-26) from the field in the second and finished 29-of-59 (49%) overall. The Wildcats made 5-of-19 from downtown and connected on 9-of-13 from the charity stripe. Mercy shot 30-percent (14-of-46) from the field overall and went just 1-for-11 from three-point land. The hosts attempted 30 free throws and made 18. The Wildcats collected 16 offensive rebounds and finished with a commanding 47-23 edge in total rebounds. Daemen also posted a sizable advantage in second-chance points (21-5) and points in the paint (44-18).

The Wildcats return to action Sunday (Jan. 20) when they play a key ECC contest at Bridgeport. UB (8-8) dropped to 4-2 in the league following a 66-61 loss to Roberts Wesleyan College tonight.
