Egan Named Semifinalist for Wooden Cup Award 1/22/2019 6:00:00 PM | By: By Mike Miranto, Sr. Associate A.D. for External Operations & Communications Share: AMHERST, N.Y. – Erin Egan (Williamsville, N.Y,), a senior on the Daemen College women's basketball team, has been named one of 25 semifinalists for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup, a prestigious award bestowed upon one intercollegiate student-athlete each year by the Athletes for a Better World (ABW) organization. The award, named for legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, recognizes the student-athlete who best exemplifies character, teamwork and citizenship – the characteristics that ABW deems central to transforming individuals, sport and society. On the basketball court, Egan has steadily increased her impact over the last four seasons. She has developed into a team captain, and is currently enjoying her finest season, averaging career-highs for points (10.4 ppg) and rebounds (5.3 rpg) while also making the first 10 starts of her career. Off the court, Egan has made a tremendous impact through her involvement with a variety of activities. She's been an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and serves her fellow classmates as a mentor in the Student-Athlete Mentorship Program. Egan has also taken the lead as the women's basketball team liaison with Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit organization that provides an extended support network to children living with serious and chronic illnesses by matching them with a college athletic team in their immediate area. Through her work with Daemen's Team IMPACT child, she was chosen to fulfill a fellowship with the organization, an opportunity that allowed her to play an integral role in supporting the development of Team IMPACT on campus, while also engaging with the surrounding community to educate others in hopes of driving increased participation. In addition, Egan has spent time volunteering as a basketball coach with her alma mater, Williamsville South High School, as well as WNY Lakers, an AAU organization. As someone majoring in a health care-related field (physical therapy), Egan has also spent countless hours volunteering at various medical facilities, including Sisters of Mercy Hospital, the Robert Warner Rehabilitation Center and Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Egan is a Dean's List student, and a recipient of the Daemen College Presidential Scholarship. This marks the third straight year that a Daemen student-athlete has been named a Wooden Citizenship Cup semifinalist. Egan joins past honorees Natalie Galus of the women's basketball team (2017) and Katie McKrell of the women's volleyball team (2018). In addition to the one intercollegiate student-athlete recipient, ABW awards two high school student-athletes and one professional athlete with the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. The mission of ABW is to use sports to develop character, teamwork and citizenship through commitment to an athletic code of living that applies to life, and to create a movement that will play a significant role in the transformation of individuals, sport and society. The final award recipients will be announced at a later date.
