Lions Outlast Wildcats In ECC Women's Tennis Action

Stasiuk Records Milestone Wins For Daemen

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team returned to East Coast Conference play here this afternoon with a 5-2 loss to Molloy College. Daemen, which was playing its first conference game since Sept. 21, dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the ECC. The host Lions improved to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the league.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Wildcats prevailed at the No. 1 doubles spot, but Molloy earned the "doubles point" after posting wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.
  • Junior Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) and freshman Lena Gruber (Munich, Germany) claimed the win at No. 1 doubles, as they defeated junior Sarah Moehrlein and freshman Hannah Niggemeier, 6-2. That tandem is now 3-4 in doubles play on the year.
  • No. 2 doubles was a competitive affair, as MC's Kailey Chin and Montaine Le Goupil-Maier posted a 6-4 win over DC's Emily Clough (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Erica Jasinski (Fairview, Pa.). Molloy earned the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 3.
  • Daemen picked up its two points during singles play, as Gruber was victorious at No. 1 singles and Stasiuk earned the win at the No. 2 spot. Molloy prevailed in the final four singles matches to claim the win.
  • Gruber posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Moehrlein. Gruber is now 3-5 overall in singles play this season.
  • Stasiuk outlasted Le Goupil-Maier at No. 2 singles by a score of 7-6, 2-6, (10-6). With the two wins today, Stasiuk becomes the fifth player in program history with 50 combined wins (singles and doubles), and just the fourth player in program history with 30 career singles wins.
  • Jasinski also went three sets at No. 3 singles, but suffered a 6-4, 2-6, 2-6 loss to Niggemeier.
