Nationally-Ranked Wildcats Cruise Past Mohawk In Final Exhibition Contest

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's basketball team's final tune-up opportunity went swimmingly as the Wildcats raced to a 116-54 win over visiting Mohawk College in exhibition action tonight at Lumsden Gymnasium. It marked Daemen's third exhibition contest in the last six days as they prep for the start of the 2019-20 regular season.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • All 14 Daemen players that suited up reached the scoring column, led by the 15 points of redshirt-senior forward Jeff Redband (Batavia, N.Y.). Redband netted 10 points after halftime as part of a 57-26 second half.
  • Joey Wallace (Rochester, N.Y.), Andrew Sischo (Guilderland, N.Y.) and Jay Sarkis (Rochester, N.Y.) all reached double figures as well. Wallace scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and added seven rebounds and five assists. Sischo played just 14 minutes but made 6-of-7 shots from the field and totaled 12 points and seven rebounds. Sarkis chipped in with 10 points and four assists.
  • Freshman guard Keith Slack (Rochester, N.Y.), redshirt-sophomore guard Tajmin Holt (Rochester, N.Y.) and redshirt-sophomore forward Ziv Basden (Nassau, Bahamas) all scored nine points. Holt added a game-high nine rebounds in 19 minutes of action.
  • Senior guard Jeffrey Duah (Bronx, N.Y.) shared game-high honors with five assists, helping Daemen rack up 27 dimes in the game.
  • Cudjoe Masuka (12 points, seven rebounds), Rommel Calura (11 points) and Rickey Morrison (11 points) paced the Mountaineers.
  • Daemen raced out to an 11-0 lead in the opening two minutes of the contest, prompting a Mohawk timeout. Redband, Sarkis and Breon Harris (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) all canned three-pointers in the spurt.
  • Mohawk came back with a 13-5 run of their own, puling within 16-13 on a free throw by Masuka. That's as close as they would get as Daemen outscored Mohawk 43-15 over the final 14:09 of the first half.
  • The Wildcats kept the pedal to the metal in the second half, scoring 52 of the first 62 points in the period in a span covering the nearly 13 minutes. The Daemen lead topped out at 71 points (109-38) on a pair of free throws by redshirt-sophomore guard Da'Shawn Hines (Amherst, N.Y.).
  • Daemen shot 53 percent from the field (47-for-88), and canned 15 three-pointers in the contest, shooting 46 percent from downtown (15-for-33). Redband and Slack accounted for three triples apiece.
GAME NOTES
  • The result marked Daemen's first win of the brief exhibition season. The Wildcats suffered losses to high-profile Division I opponents University at Buffalo (111-73) and Syracuse University (90-71) last week.
  • The game also marked Daemen's first exhibition contest against a Canadian opponent since a 102-95 win over Brock University on Oct. 30, 2015. Games against Canadian teams used to be a commonplace occurrence during Daemen's days as members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Including exhibition wins, Daemen is 40-4 all-time against Canadian opponents, and the Wildcats have won 13 straight games against them.
  • It was Daemen's first meeting with Mohawk since the 1999-2000 season. The Mountaineers compete as members of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association, and they came into tonight's game with a 1-4 record and averaging 90.3 points per game.
  • Earlier today, Daemen learned that it has been picked first in the East Coast Conference preseason coaches' poll, marking the first time they've been picked to win the league.
  • Andrew Sischo was also named the ECC Preseason Player of the Year, earning that honor for the second straight season.
  • The Wildcats are also a nationally-ranked team to start the season for the first time since transitioning to the NCAA Division II level. Daemen is ranked No. 22 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches preseason top-25 poll release today.

UP NEXT
  • Daemen opens the regular season in prestigious fashion as they partake in the Small College Basketball National Hall of Fame Classic being held this weekend (Nov. 1-2) at the St. Joseph (Mo.) Civic Arena.
  • Daemen takes a 17-game winning streak in regular season openers into their contest Friday against No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State University, a team coming off a perfect 38-0 season. The Bearcats have won two of the last three NCAA Division II national championships, and have lost just five of their last 105 contests.

Daemen College features the only NCAA Division II athletics program in the Buffalo-Niagara region, sponsoring 17 intercollegiate teams.
