Redband, Wildcats Go Bombs Away On Devils

Daemen Sinks Season-High 14 Three-Pointers In 83-57 Win

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Redshirt-senior forward Jeff Redband (Batavia, N.Y.) led a barrage from three-point range as nationally-ranked Daemen College ran past University of the Sciences 83-57 in a non-conference men's basketball game at Bobby Morgan Arena today. Redband matched his career-high with seven three-pointers, and Daemen sank a season-high 14 as a team while picking up the win in their first true road game of the season.

Daemen has now won eight straight games, improving to 8-1 this season. Their lone setback came Nov. 1 against defending national champion Northwest Missouri State University, the No. 1 ranked team in the country. U. Sciences is a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, and the Devils dropped to 2-4 on the season.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Redband shot 9-for-15 from the field and 7-of-12 from behind the arc, finishing with a career-high 25 points. He added a season-high eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal in a stat-sheet-stuffing effort. It marked Redband's second game this season with 20+ points, and the ninth of his career.
  • Daemen big man Andrew Sischo (Guilderland, N.Y.) overcame a slow start to post his eighth double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and a season-high 20 rebounds, including 12 offensive. It marked the second 20-rebound game of Sischo's career, as he finished three shy of his career-high (23 vs. Molloy College, Feb. 16, 2018). He chipped in a career-high four steals today as well.
  • Freshman guard Keith Slack (Rochester, N.Y.) came off the bench to score 10 points. He drilled a pair of three-pointers, as did fellow reserve guard Donte' Williams (Buffalo, N.Y.).
  • Joey Wallace (Rochester, N.Y.) registered seven points, seven boards, four assists and three steals, and classmate Jay Sarkis (Rochester, N.Y.) had a season-high five assists.
  • 12 of the 14 players that saw action for U. Sciences got on the score sheet, but none reached double figures. Franklin Okpala came off the bench to score a team-high nine points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Daemen's first six field goals came from behind the three-point line, part of a 9-for-17 performance from downtown in the first half. Their first two point basket came from Sischo at the 10:11 mark as the Wildcats opened up a 20-13 lead - their largest advantage of the half.
  • The Devils battled back with a 15-5 run and took a 28-25 lead following a three-pointer by Javon Gordon at the 4:08 mark.
  • Daemen responded with back-to-back threes by Redband (his sixth of the half) and Williams to spark an 11-2 spurt, allowing the Wildcats to take a 36-30 lead into halftime.
  • The momentum carried over into the second half and Daemen got their interior game going during a 17-0 run to open the period. Redband drilled another triple on Daemen's opening possession before the Wildcats got six consecutive buckets inside the paint. Two free throws by Sischo at the 14:27 mark put Daemen ahead 53-30. The Devils finally stopped the unanswered streak with a jumper by Thomas Melonja on their next possession.
  • The Daemen lead grew to 26 points (60-34) on a three-pointer by Wallace inside of 12 minutes to play. The Devils pulled within 14 points (65-51) on a pair of free throws from Gordon, but another extended run by the Wildcats, this one 11 unanswered points, put to bed any thoughts of a U. Sciences comeback.
  • Daemen outscored the Devils 47-27 in the second half, holding an opponent under 30 points for the first time this season. The 57 points allowed for the game are also a season-low.
  • Daemen ended 14-for-35 from three-point range, outscoring the Devils (6-for-19) by 24 points from behind the arc.
  • The Wildcats also finished with a season-high 11 steals, their first game with 10 or more since Feb. 22, 2019 at St. Thomas Aquinas College.

GAME NOTES
  • Daemen is ranked No. 1 in the D2SIDA East Region media poll, No. 8 in the D2SIDA national media poll and No. 13 in the NABC top-25 poll.
  • The tip-off of today's game was delayed approximately 80 minutes due to the absence of officials.
  • The 26-point margin of victory was a season-high for Daemen. It also marked their first game allowing less than 60 points since Dec. 31, 2018 vs. College of St. Rose (74-55).
  • Redband's assault from downtown tonight resulted in him passing Kharmen Wingard for third on the program's all-time three-point field goals list. He entered the game just one shy of Wingard (237). His point total also included the 1,100th of his career, and he passed Chris Lewis for 17th place on Daemen's all-time scoring list. Redband has now totaled 1,120 points and 243 three-point field goals in 97 career games.
  • Redband has now made at least one three-pointer in 40 of the last 43 games. Tonight's shooting exhibition marked the 15th game in his career with at least five three-pointers. He last made seven threes in a game on Feb. 15, 2019 vs. LIU Post.
  • Sischo has now posted 33 double-doubles in 67 career games. His string of six consecutive 20-point games was snapped tonight.
  • U. Sciences freshman forward Connor Murphy had his string of four straight double-doubles snapped. Murphy came in averaging team-highs of 14.8 points and 13.6 rebounds per game, but was limited to just three points and eight boards today.
  • All four of U. Sciences' losses this season have come against opponents from the East Coast Conference. Losses prior to today came against St. Thomas Aquinas (70-52), the University of the District of Columbia (65-64) and the University of Bridgeport (70-56).
  • Since joining the ECC in 2013-14, Daemen is now 17-3 against CACC opponents. That includes a 16-2 mark since head coach Mike MacDonald took the reins prior to the 2014-15 season. MacDonald has engineered a 13-game winning streak against CACC teams, and the Wildcats improved to 4-0 against them this season.
  • It was just the second all-time meeting between Daemen and U. Sciences (formerly Philadelphia College of Pharmacy), and the first since a 68-56 Daemen win on Jan. 29, 2000 at Lumsden Gymnasium.
  • The win was Daemen's first in the state of the Pennsylvania since Nov. 23, 2016 (90-79 at Edinboro University), snapping a three-game slide in The Keystone State.

NEXT JUMP BALL
  • Daemen returns to Lumsden Gymnasium for a non-conference clash Wednesday (Dec. 4) against Salem University (W. Va.). The Wildcats, undefeated at home this season (6-0), will welcome Roberts Wesleyan College to Lumsden Gymnnasium next Saturday (Dec. 7) for their East Coast Conference season opener.
