Sischo Powers Men's Basketball To Come-From-Behind Win

Wildcats Rally From 17-Point First-Half Deficit To Ground Golden Falcons

AMHERST, N.Y. - It was a tale two halves tonight for the Daemen College men's basketball team as they rallied from a sizable first-half deficit to score a 95-80 win over visiting Felician University in opening-round action of the ECC-CACC Challenge presented by Western New York Knee and Orthopedic Surgery PC. The two-day event pits teams from the East Coast Conference against their counterparts from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

Daemen trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half, and by 11 at halftime, before redshirt junior center Andrew Sischo (Guilderland, N.Y.) and the Wildcats came to life, outscoring the Golden Falcons 56-30 over the final 20 minutes. With the win, Daemen improved to 2-1 on the season. Felician dropped to 0-1.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Felician came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, and their quick-strike attack produced 24 fastbreak points and eight three-point field goals in the opening half.
  • The Golden Falcons used a 16-2 run to open up a 38-23 lead, prompting a Daemen timeout and sending shock waves through a standing-room-only crowd at Lumsden Gymnasium. The Felician advantage grew to 17 points with 1:48 to go in the period when Jay'von Jackson converted three free throws after being fouled behind the arc.
  • Daemen would score the final six points of the opening half, including a layup by Sischo with 18 ticks left, to trail 50-39 at the break.
  • The Wildcats quickly got Sischo established inside to start the second half, and forced three-point misses by Felician as they clawed their way back. With the Wildcats trailing 56-47, the hosts embarked on a game-changing 23-4 run spanning more than six minutes. Sischo accounted for 13 points in the spurt, including nine straight points that turned a 56-56 tie into a 65-56 advantage. Jeff Redband (Batavia, N.Y.) capped the run with two free throws at the 10:13 mark, putting Daemen ahead 74-60.
  • Felician pulled with seven (85-78) on a pair of Nas Amos free throws with 3:20 to go, but Sischo answered on the other end, and Redband's three-pointer with 1:43 to go was the dagger.
  • Sischo finished with 31 points and 19 rebounds, his third double-double in as many games this season. He shot 12-of-17 from the field, and added four assists and a career-high five blocks.
  • Senior guard Breon Harris (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) contributed 18 points, six assists and three steals.
  • Jay Sarkis (Rochester, N.Y.) and Kyle Harris (Buffalo, N.Y.) also reached double figures, scoring 11 and 10 points respectively.
  • Jackson posted 20 points to lead a quartet of double-figure scorers for the Golden Falcons. Zamir Wright chipped in with 16, while Dee-End McRae and Jeff Lewis notched 12 apiece. After a hot first half, both Jackson and Wright were held to five points apiece in the second.
  • After shooting 8-of-19 from downtown in the first half, Felician made just 1-of-15 three-point attempts in the second.
  • Daemen enjoyed 58 percent shooting in the contest, connecting on 37-of-64 field goal attempts.

GAME NOTES
  • Daemen's win came after a thrilling 78-75 victory for Roberts Wesleyan College in the opening game of the ECC-CACC Challenge. Reggie Clark's three-pointer with 1.4 seconds left lifted the Redhawks past Nyack College. Daemen's win pushed the ECC teams to 2-0 on the day.
