Wildcats Close Season With Loss At St. Thomas Aquinas

SPARKILL, N.Y. - Freshman forward Jorge Mazariego scored two goals to lead St. Thomas Aquinas College to a 6-1 victory over Daemen College here today in East Coast Conference men's soccer action. It marked the 2019 season finale for both teams. Daemen finished 0-17-0 overall and 0-8-0 in the ECC, while STAC closes at 4-11-1 overall and 3-5-0 in the league.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • STAC opened the scoring just opened the scoring just 6:07 into the contest when freshman defender Ryan Collins scored off a feed from junior forward Anthony Sanchez.
  • The Wildcats evened the score in just seven minutes later following an unassisted goal by freshman midfielder Derek Bartlo (Williamsville, N.Y.). It marked the second goal of the year for Bartlo.
  • STAC took the lead for good when senior defender Nicholas Fiore converted a penalty kick in the 21st minute, and Mazariego's first goal of the game five minutes later gave the hosts a 3-1 lead.
  • The Spartans took a 5-1 lead into halftime and Mazariego closed out the scoring with just 2:28 to play in the game. The rookie closed out the year with a team-high seven goals and 16 points for STAC.
  • STAC posted a 9-1 edge in shots during the first half and finished with an 11-6 advantage overall.
  • Sophomore Eithan Hahn (Lancaster, N.Y.) went the distance in goal for the Wildcats and made two saves.
     

GAME NOTES

  • STAC has now won four of the last five meetings between the two teams and the Spartans now own a 5-2-1 advantage in the all-time series.
