AMHERST, N.Y. - Katie Titus of Daemen College has been named the East Coast Conference Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week for games played December 2-8. The official announcement of weekly awards was made in the ECC's weekly sport report which was released this afternoon.
Titus, a 6-foot sophomore forward, led the Wildcats to a 70-47 win over rival Roberts Wesleyan College in their only game of the week this past Saturday. The win extended Daemen's home winning streak to 11-straight games, which is tied with Bentley College for the longest home winning streak among NCAA Division II East Region teams. Titus headed up a defensive unit that forced 25 RWC turnovers and limited the Redhawks to 15 points or less in each of the four quarters. Titus recorded seven rebounds (five defensive) and collected a career-high five steals in the game. She also contributed on the offensive end with 14 points.
Titus has started all nine contests this season, and is producing 13.4 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game. She also leads the team in field goal percentage (.521) and blocked shots (10). She is the second Daemen player to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors this year, joining teammate Caroline White (Fairport, N.Y.) who earned the honor two weeks ago. Titus and White are the only Daemen players to earn the honor since the ECC first began naming a Defensive Player of the Week last year. Titus was a two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week recipient as a rookie last year.
With today's announcement, a Daemen player has now collected a weekly honor from the ECC in each of the last three weeks. In addition to White and Titus being named Defensive Player of the Week, redshirt junior Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) was named Player of the Week last week. Filbert was named to the conference's weekly honor roll today after netting a game-high 22 points in the win over RWC.
Titus was voted first team All-ECC and ECC Rookie of the Year last year after leading the team in points per game (12.1), rebounds per game (7.2), three-pointers (32) and blocks (38). She became the first women's basketball player from Daemen to garner a major award from the ECC since the Wildcats joined the conference. She also became the first freshman to earn first-team All-ECC honors since Madison Rowland of Queens College in 2013-14. Titus ranked first among ECC freshmen in points per game and second in rebounds per game. She shot 49-percent (109-for-222) from the field and averaged 17.4 points and 8.9 rebounds over the final 16 games. Her efforts earned her conference recognition in six of the final eight weeks. She was named ECC Player of the Week twice (Jan. 14, Jan. 28) and became the first player in team history to earn multiple ECC Player of the Week honors in the same season. She was also a two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week selection (Nov. 19, Jan. 22), and a four-time ECC Rookie of the Week pick (Jan. 22, Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 18). She was only the freshman in the league to be named ECC Player of the Week and also the only ECC player to be named Player of the Week, Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week.
Titus has played in all 37 games since the start of the 2018-19 season and has been in the starting lineup 29 times. She has shot 46-percent (183-400) from the field overall and 35-percent (54-154) from three-point land and has totaled 461 points (12.5 per game) and 257 rebounds (6.9 per game). She has led the Wildcats to a 25-12 record over her two-year career.
Daemen (7-2, 1-0 ECC), which ranked 10th in this week's NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region media poll, is off to its best start since the 2012-13 season when the Wildcats won eight of their first nine games. Daemen is idle until this weekend when they travel to Mercy College (Dec. 13) and regionally-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas College (Dec. 15) for ECC games.
