NORTH CANTON, Ohio - In their second match of the spring season and coming off their first win, the Daemen College women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 defeat to Walsh University today in non-conference play at the North Canton Racquet Club.
The loss drops Daemen to 1-13 while the Cavaliers move to 3-3.
The hosting Cavaliers opened the match by winning the first three doubles matches giving them one point out of the best of seven series. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the winner of two of the three doubles matches will receive a point while giving one point to each win in a singles match.
WU's Mercedes Fernandez and Nicole Beidacki took the first win over Daemen's Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) and Jessica Robins (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) by a score of 6-1. The team of Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) and Sarah Kenny (Perth, Australia) both fell in the second doubles matches 6-1, followed by Andrea D'Sa (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Alliya Foster (Bronx, N.Y.) also falling 6-0.
In singles play, Stasiuk fought in the No. 1 position, but fell 6-2, 7-5 to Fernandez. The Cavaliers further earned wins in the singles from Maria Kacalova (6-3, 6-4 in No. 2), Katarina Razum (6-2, 6-1 in No. 3), Beidacki (6-0, 6-0 in No. 4), Clara Drasch (6-0, 6-0 in No. 5) and Sofia Khairutdinova (6-0, 6-0 in No.6).
The Wildcats will face off against Le Moyne College on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
