DEWITT, N.Y.. - The Daemen College women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Le Moyne College in a non-conference matchup here tonight at Elevate Fitness. Daemen dropped to 1-14 on the year, while the host Dolphins improved to 13-5. Le Moyne, a member of the Northeast-10 Conference, entered the match ranked 10th in the International Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.
The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the match after winning all three doubles matches by a 6-0 score. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.
Daemen's top duo of Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) lost to sophomore Birden Oz and freshman Marta Nunez. The Dolphins secured the doubles point after sophomore Camila Humala and freshman Brooke Fernandez defeated junior Sarah Kenny (Perth, Australia) and freshman Coutney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) at No. 2 doubles.
Stasiuk turned in a solid effort for Daemen at No. 1 doubles, but Nunez secured the point with a 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 victory. The remaining singles matches were decided in straight sets. Oz defeated Robbins at No. 2 singles, Humala downed Kenny at No. 3 singles and freshman Briana Laureti defeated Otis at No. 4 singles. Junior Alliya Foster (Bronx, N.Y.) and redshirt junior Andrea D'Sa (Bellmore, N.Y.) also suffered losses for Daemen during singles play.
Daemen is idle until March 10 when it travels to Division I St. Bonaventure University.
