AMHERST, N.Y. - Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) and Erin Egan (Williamsville, N.Y.) of Daemen College have each garnered East Coast Conference weekly accolades for games played Feb. 11-17. Titus was named ECC Rookie of the Week, while Egan was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week. The official announcement was made via the league's weekly sport report which was released this afternoon from conference headquarters in West Babylon, N.Y.
Titus and Egan led the Wildcats to home wins over Long Island University Post (60-53) and regionally-ranked New York Institute of Technology (54-38) this past weekend. The wins extended Daemen's winning streak to 11 games, marking its longest winning streak since the 2007-08 season when the Wildcats put together a 17-game winning streak. Daemen also maintained its hold on second place in the league standings with the wins, and moved closer to securing one of the top two seeds and a first-round bye in the upcoming ECC Championship Tournament. Daemen, which still has a shot at winning the ECC regular-season title, needs to win one of its remaining four games to secure one of the top two seeds.
Daemen stands at 15-8 overall and 12-2 in the ECC and was ranked No. 9 in last week's Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region media poll. The Wildcats entered the poll for the first time ever two weeks ago.
Titus, a 6-foot freshman forward, posted back-to-back double-doubles and averaged 19.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks during the two wins this past weekend. She played 37 minutes and totaled 17 points and 13 rebounds against LIU Post and followed up with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 35 minutes against NYIT.
It marks the sixth straight week—and the seventh time overall—that Titus has earned some kind of weekly recognition from the ECC. Titus has played a huge role during the Daemen winning streak. In that span, she has shot 48-percent (86-178) from the field and is averaging 20.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. She also leads the team in three-pointers (28), blocks (20) and steals (15) during the streak.
Titus is the only ECC player to be named Player of the Week, Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week this year. She collects ECC Rookie of the Week honors for the third straight week and the fourth time this season. She has already become the first player in team history to earn multiple ECC Player of the Week honors in the same season, having collected that honor for Jan. 7-13 and Jan. 21-27. Titus has also been a two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week selection (Nov. 12-18, Jan. 14-20).
Titus has appeared in all 23 games this season and has made 16 starts, including the last 15 games. She is averaging 12.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. She ranks high among the team's leaders in scoring (second), rebounding (first), field goals (first), steals (second) and blocks (second). She also ranks second in three-pointers made (33). She has averaged a team-high 16.4 points and a team-high 8.9 rebounds during Daemen's 14 conference games, and currently ranks first among ECC freshmen in points per game and second in rebounds per game.
Egan, a 6-foot senior forward, headed up a defense that limited LIU Post and NYIT to a combined 91 points (45.5 per game) and a held the two teams to a combined 31-of-125 (25%) shooting from the field. Egan collected 18 rebounds over the two games and also registered seven blocks and a steal. She contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and five blocks in just 21 minutes against LIU Post and followed up with her first double-double of the season (10 pts, 11 rebs) against NYIT.
Egan has appeared in all 20 games this season and has made 19 starts. She is averaging 10.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.5 blocks per game. She ranks high among the team's leaders in scoring (third), rebounding (second), field goals (third), steals (third) and blocks (first). She ranks third among the ECC leaders in both total blocks (30) and blocks per game.
Daemen is idle until this weekend when it travels to regionally-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas College (Feb. 22) and the University of the District of Columbia (Feb. 24) for ECC games. STAC (22-3, 13-1) has won six straight games and is ranked No. 4 regionally. Daemen handed STAC is only league loss (62-54) back on Jan. 25.
