Wildcats Suffer Non-League Loss To Le Moyne

DEWITT, N.Y.. - The Daemen College men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Le Moyne College in a non-conference matchup here tonight at Elevate Fitness. Daemen dropped to 0-6 on the year.  Le Moyne, a member of the Northeast-10 Conference, improved to 2-1.

The host Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the match after winning all three doubles matches. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.

Daemen's top doubles team of sophomore Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and junior Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) suffered a 6-0 loss to sophomore Tom Jarry and junior Philip Blythe. The Wildcats evened things up when seniors Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) and David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Columbia) outlasted Xavier Graells and Tyler Underoowd 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. Senior Justin Miller (Ithaca, N.Y.) and junior James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y.). also competed in doubles play for Daemen and suffered a 6-3 setback to senior Andres Hernandez and freshman Gerardo Wibmer at No. 3 doubles which surrendered the match's doubles point to the Dolphins.

Four of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets. Ruiz Martinez took and early lead at No. 1 singles with a 7-5 victory in set one, but Jarry evened the match with a 7-5 win in set two and completed the comeback with a 6-0 victory in set three. No. 3 singles was also a competitive affair, with Hernandez outlasting Gonzalez Villegas 6-4, 5-7, 6-1. Williamson also turned in a solid effort for the Wildcats at No. 3 singles, falling to sophomore Christian Erickson by a 6-3, 6-2 score.

Daemen is idle until next weekend when it travels to Fairmont State University (Mar. 1) and Salem University (Mar. 2) for non-league matches.
