LAKEWOOD, CALIF. - The Daemen College women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to the Angelo State University Belles today in a non-conference matchup at the Lakewood Tennis Center. The loss moves Daemen to 1-16 on the year while the win moves the Belles to 11-2. The Belles are a Division II member of the Lone Star Conference based in Texas.
The Belles first point came from winning all three doubles matches by a score of 6-0. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.
Top seeded duo for the Wildcats of Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) and Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) faced off against the ITA preseason No. 6 ranked Valentina Gonzalez and Zoe Gubbels.Â
All six singles matches were won in straight sets by the Belles. Stasiuk was defeated by Gonzalez in the top seeded singles match 6-3, 6-2. Robins was defeated by junior Maria Delgadillo, who was ranked the No. 6 player in her home country of Mexico upon graduation, by a score of 6-1,6-1. Sarah Kenny (Perth, Australia), Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.), Alliya Foster (Bronx, N.Y.) and Andrea D'Sa (Bellmore, N.Y.) all fell in singles play for the Wildcats.Â
The Wildcats will remain in California for a matchup against Southern Utah on Thursday, March 14 from San Diego. The match will begin at 10:30 PST.
