Daemen To Observe Girls & Women In Sport Day With Guest Speaker

Zahra Arabzada To Speak March 31 On Campus

3/15/2019 8:45:00 AM

AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College will welcome Zahra Arabzada as the featured speaker for the Athletic Department's annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Arabzada will speak on campus at an event that is slated for Sunday, March 31 at 10 a.m.

A native of Afghanistan, Arabzada has become a social activist since coming to the United States. She champions rights for women and children, and has used her own experiences as a runner to shine a light on her cause. Her blog - thehijabirunner.com - details her journey, from an Afghan boarding school in Kabul to her first educational experience in the U.S. at St. George's School in Rhode Island. It was there that Arabzada was first exposed to sports, and she's gone on to complete six half-marathons and a 50-mile ultra-marathon.

The National Girls and Women in Sports Day event has become a staple of the Athletic Department's spring schedule. Past events have included speakers such as U.S. Senator and 2020 presidential candidate Kirsten Gillibrand, Olympic bobsledder Elana Meyer Taylor, U.S. paralympic athlete April Holmes, former Boston College basketball player and local litigator Kathy Sweet and U.S. track and field team member Mary Saxer.
