Daemen snapped a four-match slide with the win, improving to 2-10 on the season and a perfect 6-0 all-time against the Highlanders. Houghton, a member of NCAA Division III and the Empire 8 Conference, saw their modest two-match winning streak go by the wayside as they dropped to 3-4 on the season. The match was played under a Division III scoring format that awards points to each of the three doubles winners. Daemen managed to open a 3-0 lead by sweeping through doubles play. Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) got things started with an 8-6 win in the No. 1 doubles position, defeating HC's Jake Fisler and Louis-Guillaume Garcia 8-6. David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Burgos, Spain) followed suit with an 8-5 win in the second doubles slot, and Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Patrick O'Brien (Pittsford, N.Y.) scored an 8-5 win in the third position to complete the sweep. Ruiz Martinez, Gonzalez Villegas, O'Brien and Milner all scored wins in singles play as well, sealing the Wildcats' first dual-match victory since a 5-2 defeat of regionally-ranked Fairmont State University on March 1. Ruiz Martinez bested his fellow countryman Garcia in the top spot of the lineup. In the third position, Gonzalez Villegas won 6-3, 6-4 over Fisler. O'Brien, who has been hampered with an injury this spring, competed in singles play for the first time since October and defeated Ethan Yung 6-0, 6-2 in the fifth position. Milner was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Matthew Cicero in the sixth position. Ruiz Martinez, a two-time All-East Coast Conference selection, now stands with 30 singles wins in his career, becoming just the third player in team history to record that many. Gonzalez Villegas' singles win gives him 20 for his career, becoming just the sixth player in team history to do so. His doubles win was the 37th of his career, extending his all-time program record. Milner's two wins give him 32 combined singles/doubles wins in his career, pulling him into a tie with Andrew LeMar for eighth all-time. Daemen will return to action with a pair of road matches this weekend, including their East Coast Conference season opener at perennial powerhouse N.Y. Institute of Technology on Saturday, March 30. The Wildcats close the weekend Sunday with a non-conference tilt at University of the Sciences.
