Women's Tennis Earns Second Straight Win

HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team picked up its second consecutive win today, knocking off host Houghton College 6-3 in a non-conference match at the Kerr-Pegula Field House. Daemen, which defeated Thiel College this past Sunday, improved to 3-17 on the season. The host Highlanders, a member of NCAA Division III and the Empire 8 Conference, dropped to 5-10 in their season finale.

Points were awarded to each of the doubles winners today in a scoring format used by Division III teams. Daemen established a 2-1 lead after taking two of the three doubles matches at the outset. The Wildcats were awarded a point by default in the third doubles position, and their top pair of Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) and Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) earned an 8-3 win over HC's Tori Noller and Amanda Carl. The match marked Robins' 98th career appearance in doubles play; the team's lone senior stands just two appearances shy of becoming just the third player in team history to reach 100. Tessa Brown and Alicia Cline got Houghton on the board with a 9-7 win in the second doubles position.

Daemen's lead went quickly to 3-1 as the Wildcats won a default point for the sixth singles position. They were able to clinch the overall victory by earning points in the first, second and fifth singles positions as well.

Stasiuk took down Noller 6-1, 6-0 in the first singles position. Robins was a 6-1, 6-1 winner in the second singles slot over Carl; it was also her 98th career singles appearance, tying former teammate Gretchen Ringler for second in team history. The Wildcats' final point came from Andrea D'Sa (Bellmore, N.Y.) who earned the first singles win of her career with a 6-4, 6-3 final over Maddison Soth.

With wins in both doubles and singles play today, Stasiuk now sits with 41 combined wins in her career. She's just the sixth player in team history to record more than 40 combined singles/doubles wins.

Robins, who ranks third in team history for combined wins, increased her career wins total to 66. She stands just one singles win shy of becoming just the third player in team history with 40 career singles victories.

Today's win also keeps Daemen unbeaten (6-0) in the all-time series with Houghton.

Four matches remain on the Wildcats' spring schedule, beginning next Tuesday, April 2 with a road tilt vs. Elmira College.
