Winkfield Named To Off The Block All-Independent Team 4/11/2019 12:42:00 PM By: By Mike Miranto, Sr. Associate A.D. for External Operations & Communications AMHERST, N.Y. - Freshman Jahari Winkfield (Oswego, Ill.) has been named to the 2019 Off the Block All-Independent Team, recognizing the best NCAA Division I-II players who compete for teams without a conference affiliation. Winkfield, a 6-foot-4 right side/middle hitter, has starred for Daemen during the team's inaugural campaign. He leads the team in kills (211), kills per set (2.89) and total attacks (566), and he's also totaled 28 blocks this season, fourth-best on the squad. Winkfield has racked up double-figure kills in 10 of Daemen's 21 matches this season, including a career-best 21 vs. Misericordia University on March 2. He also reached 20 kills in Daemen's 3-2 defeat of Alderson Broaddus University on Jan. 11, giving the Wildcats a win in their first-ever match, and again on Jan. 12 vs. Emmanuel College. Independent teams competing in NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball this season include Daemen, Alderson Broaddus, Lincoln Memorial University, Coker College and Queens University of Charlotte, and head coaches from those teams comprised the voting committee for the All-Independent Team. Winkfield is joined on the All-Independent Team by A.J. Risavy, Evan Cory and Pedro Carvalho of Lincoln Memorial, Joao Victor Santos of Coker, Cameron Snaden of Alderson Broaddus, and Tristan Santoyo, J.P. Payne and Ruben Greenstein of Queens. Launched in 2011, Off the Block is a website that specializes in the coverage of men's collegiate volleyball. This marks the third straight year that Off the Block has named an All-Independent Team. Daemen officials announced the addition of men's volleyball in May of 2017. The addition was made possible by a $60,000 grant from the MotorMVB Foundation, a non-profit organization that focuses on the growth of boys' and men's volleyball at all levels in the United States. Daemen became just the 27th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II men's volleyball program in the country when it made the announcement, and the only Division II team North of the Mason-Dixon Line. Daemen's inaugural season concludes this weekend at the Independent Volleyball Association Championship hosted by Lincoln Memorial. Daemen will face Lincoln Memorial in their tournament opener on Friday evening. A full tournament preview was posted to daemenwildcats.com earlier today.
