Men's Tennis Falls To Queens

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to perennial powerhouse Queens College in an East Coast Conference dual match at Miller Tennis Center. Queens, which is ranked second in the Oracle/ITA East Region poll, improved to 9-7 overall while keeping their unblemished ECC record intact at 4-0. The two-time defending ECC champions have now won 22 of their last 25 ECC regular season matches dating back to the 2015 season.

Daemen has now dropped two consecutive matches, including a grueling 4-3 loss to rival Roberts Wesleyan College earier this week. The Wildcats (5-13, 1-3 ECC) had entered the week as winners in four of their last five matches. The loss tonight, coupled with RWC's 5-2 loss to Saint Thomas Aquinas College, has officially eliminated Daemen from conference tournament contention. The top four teams in final ECC standings will advance to the conference tournament which is slated for April 26-27 at Queens.

Queens opened the match by sweeping through doubles play. Kareem Rashad and Jose Zurro (6-1) and Stan Bedrune and Camilo Arias (6-1) cruised to wins in the second and third doubles positions, respectively. Despite surrendering the doubles point, Daemen got a solid effort from their top duo - Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) and Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) - who pushed All-ECC selections Cosme Jubera and Richard Sec to the limit before falling 7-6.

Queens continued to roll as the match shifted to singles play. Jubera (6-0, 6-2), Rashad (6-2, 6-3) and Sec (6-3, 6-1) all earned their second points of the match. Additional singles wins came from Mariano Biblioni (6-2, 6-3), Nicholas Volos (6-3, 6-3) and Hugo Evangelista de Andrade (6-2, 6-1).

Daemen wraps up the ECC portion of their 2018-19 schedule Saturday when they host St. Thomas Aquinas for a 7:30 p.m. match. It marks the final home match in the careers of seniors Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain), David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y.) who will be recognized during a brief pre-match ceremony.
